Obituary for James Lee Tucker, Rogers, AR - Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

He attended Westark Community College where he played baseball. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1982 and served until 1987. He served aboard the USS Ajax and completed two Western Pacific deployments. He owned Exotic Tropicals Aquarium Shop in Rogers, Ark., for several years before entering a new career in 2010. After earning his nursing degree at Northwest Technical Institute, he began working as a nurse at Innisfree in Rogers, where he cared for others until his death. He is preceded in death by his parents. James is survived by his daughter, Merideth (Josh) Hanks; his son, Dallas Lee Tucker, and his love and companion, Lauri Sullins, all of Rogers; his sister, Carolyn (Rick) Beuttel of Overland Park, Kan.; and brother, Mike (Brenda) Tucker of Van Buren. "GT," Grandpa Tucker, is also survived by four grandsons, Miles Hanks, Mason Hanks, Macklin Hanks, and Maverick Hanks, all of Rogers, and nieces and nephews.James accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior several years ago and proudly shared his good news with others. Those who knew him when he was younger know he loved playing basketball and baseball. He continued to love sports, especially the Hogs, his whole life. He also had a passion for his hobbies, especially restoring and showing old cars. Longo's celebrates 60 years

In the next year or two, the company will be opening three new locations – in Ancaster, Guelph and Ajax – and hoping to win over customers like Mary Audia, who has been shopping at the chain for 24 years. “If you need something, they get it for you – like a personal shopper,” she says. “If something you want isn't there, they get it. You don't get there anywhere else.” At the first Longo’s location in 1956, about a third of the company’s business came from phone orders, where customers would ask for the essentials – beef, cereal, carrots, tomatoes, lettuce, Crisco and Delsey toilet paper. Back then, most customers didn’t know about products that we’re familiar with now – items like kale, quinoa, yogurt, olive oil and avocados. “Years ago, avocados were around, but we sold very little,” says Gus. “At that time, it was the people who travelled – they’d know about them. Now, avocados are mainstream. People can’t go without their guacamole!” “It’s true,” adds Rosanne. “Now you’ve got all these super foods, like kale and quinoa. People are cooking with rapini and artichokes, because of what food education has done – because of the Food Network, celebrity chefs and restaurants. People are just more food-savvy and health-conscious.” When asked about the types of jobs he’d do in the early days, Gus chuckles, then speaks slowly, in a very matter-of-fact way. “When I came back from school, I used to clean up the basement – all the trimmings from the vegetables,” he says. “My dad and older brothers left that for me. I’d take out the garbage and sweep the floors. “I also used to sell stuff on the weekends, outside. They put an apron on me, and I’d sell flowers and stuff like that. I’d stop all of the men and ladies. I did all right, in that job.
