Hiking in Colorado: 5 hikes, 4 wildflowers and a dozen places to apres near Vail

You can also peel off the outer stem of fireweed and fry up the inner stem with garlic. Find these flowers growing along Gore Creek and other wetland areas.2. Cow ParsnipAnother flower that likes being near water, cow parsnip is very tall with a bunch of tiny white flowers on top. While the leaves on these look tempting to use as toilet paper, Squires said the seemingly soft surface actually has little barbs, so beware.3. MonkshoodA family member to the revered columbine (Colorado's state flower), monkshood generally grows in marshy areas and is often spotted on trails in alpine areas. These purple flowers actually resemble a monk's hood. They are poisonous to eat but beautiful to see.4. Wild RosesThe flowers of the wild roses may be gone for the season, but their rose hip fruit is still available to harvest. These are said to have as much vitamin C as an orange, and you can pick them to steep for tea.Hot Spots To Apres-HikeWe polled some of our locals online to get a feel for where people are enjoying post-activity replenishment. Kevin Flowers: Allen B. Green, thank you for your service

Rev. Jesse Jackson’s visit to Second Baptist in October 2000. Jackson was stumping for the Democratic presidential ticket of Al Gore and Joseph Lieberman. Green was also part of the program that day in a packed church that crackled with energy. And on Aug. 1, 2012 — five years ago today — my father, Richard C. Flowers Sr., died.A week later, Green helped officiate my dad’s funeral at Second Baptist. It goes without saying that I will forever be grateful to him for that. On Wednesday, Erie City Council is expected to recognize Green’s service to the Erie community via a resolution sponsored by Councilman Mel Witherspoon designating a portion of Monroe Street near his church — between East 26th and East 28th streets — as Rev. Allen B. Green Way.The resolution states that Green is being honored for his “service and dedication to the City of Erie and the Second Baptist Church where he served as pastor and mentor for over 37 years.” Good stuff. Congratulations, Rev. Green. Well deserved. And you are most definitely appreciated.Erie Times-News staff writers share personal stories. Kevin Flowers can be reached at 870-1693.
