'U-pick' flowers? Couple who met in Alaska open farm where you can pick your own bouquet - York Daily Record

Codorus Township and there are corn fields on both sides of the road. But work your way down Buffalo Valley Road, over an unnamed stream and around a bend, and suddenly the corn is replaced by flowers. Row after row of flowers are in the peak of bloom. They are all part of Terra Farms, a U-pick flower farm owned by Loni and Andy Snyder. The couple moved onto the 35-acre farm at 2605 Buffalo Valley Road almost a year ago from Shrewsbury with the idea of creating a flower farm that would allow people to create their own bouquets and arrangements. “We tend to call ourselves farmer florists,” said Lori, a North Dakota native. “People can come out here and pick. But I also really loved the florist side of the business, and I wanted to use 100 percent my own flowers instead of buying flowers that have been flown from who knows where.” More: Visually impaired kayakers leave comfort zone for adventure on the water More: His Mennonite ancestors fled persecution to York. Growing Peace and Freedom, One Flower At A Time - Spectrum News

War of 1812. It's here in Batavia where those who lost everything in the burning of Buffalo fled. An arsenal was also built to keep the British out. It proved successful and Batavia became a place where people felt safe and welcome. Now the garden blooms as a way to remember those dark days by shedding light on our freedom, and something else, too. "It brings the community together and builds peace," Toal said. "You have to get along with each other." There's a butterfly bench and a globe that serves as a thank you to the military. "It shows that it's international, it's not just here in Batavia," Toal said. "If we can make peace in our little corner of New York, then we can do it across the world." They already are. At the end of the garden, 22 flags fly. Each represents a country where a peace garden grows. It connects Batavia to an international trail. The closest one is across Lake Ontario in Canada. If you drive down West Main Street in Batavia and see these flags— they represent the 22 other countries that have peace gardens. The previous country added to picks the next. pic.twitter.com/nVyORvYVqJ — Breanna Fuss (@BreannaFuss) July 3, 2019 On the American side of the lake, there are about a dozen gardens from Niagara Falls to Oswego. The gardens are open 24/7 and are free. "When you walk in the garden and you read the history and you think about it, it's a peaceful feeling," Toal sai...

Amherst Garden Walk planned for Saturday - Amherst Bee

Saturday, July 6. The self-guided tour attracts not only residents from the area but also people from around the world who visit Buffalo in the summertime to tour the region’s gardens. According to Chuck Hidy, who co-chairs the event with Darryl Moden, the garden walk includes houses located throughout the town. Residences on streets such as Longmeadow Road, Reist Street, Woodshire South and North French Road are showcasing their gardens. Hidy encourages residents to attend the event, especially after the delayed start to spring and summer. “It’s a chance to experience the great outdoors, and what better way to get inspiration,” Hidy said, adding that there will be a mix of different styles and something to suit everyone’s taste. Some of the garden features include a rock garden and pond, English gardens, annuals, perennials and garden decor, among others. The event also allows garden enthusiasts to socialize and share their passion with those who attend the garden tour. Garden walk maps to help guide people through the event are now available at several locations, including most local nurseries and 111 Campus Drive West. The maps include descriptions of the gardens as well. Further information about the event is available on the garden walk’s Facebook...
