Obituary: Leonard Mathew Saari, 81, Of Riverside - Greenwich, CT Patch

Chi Psi fraternity, and the University of Michigan Law School.His work career began at the NY law firm Hughes, Hubbard, Blair & Reid, followed by legal positions at Pennsylvania Power & Light, Citizens Utilities Company, and Bowater Incorporated, where he became Vice President, Secretary and Assistant General Counsel and helped take the company public through a spin-off from its parent English company. After Bowater relocated to South Carolina, he joined Trigen Energy in White Plains.Len's interests included sailing, skiing, golf, tennis and music. A member of Riverside Yacht Club since 1975, he was at first an active Flying Scot sailor. After acquiring a J-30, he won the Stratford Shoal Race, his first race in "Windsprint," followed shortly thereafter by a first in the Manhasset-Falkner Island Race. He also participated for many years in Vespers and served as Secretary, Fleet Captain and Head of Admissions at the Yacht Club.Len sang in glee clubs in both high school and college and met his wife, Yanna, while singing in the New York Oratorio Society. Upon moving to Greenwich, he joined the Greenwich Choral Society as well as the First Congregational Church Choir and also sang and performed in Connecticut Grand Opera, Westchester Hudson Opera, and several local Gilbert & Sullivan productions. For many years he was an enthusiastic member of the Off Sounders, a local acapella men's singing group. Invasive plant a toxic 'horror'

The New York Times, Scientific American and Good Housekeeping were among them. The attention, Powers said, likely stems from the recent discovery of giant hogweed for the first time in Virginia. According to Scientific American, giant hogweed has now been found growing in 12 states. The news of a Virginia sighting — coupled with the severity of injuries that can be caused by physical contact with the plant — created a situation ripe for social media attention, Ford said. Searches for the term “giant hogweed” on social media platforms like Twitter show dozens, if not hundreds, of users posting photos of the plant and linking to articles while warning “do no touch.” “Social media drove it,” Ford said of the ongoing story of giant hogweed. But that is a good thing, he said. Getting information out about toxic or harmful plants is a good way to prevent injuries or even deaths, Ford said. Ford specifically referenced stories about children who were killed because they used hollow stalks of poison hemlock as whistles, and foragers who mistook young giant hogweed for wild carrot tops. Because of those cases, Ford said he welcomes ongoing media attention. “I think it’s a good thing because it keeps you aware,” he said. On the hunt for wildflowers through Anza-Borrego and Joshua Tree

I drove south to a less visited area of the park to find the Pictograph trailhead, at the end of a 5-mile dirt road in the park’s Little Blair Valley. Remarkably, my cellphone GPS directed me right to it. As I turned off the main road, I could see the entire valley carpeted with countless tiny purple flowers of the native geranium, Herons Bill.By 8:30 a.m., I had parked my car and started hiking the 2.6 mile Pictograph trail, which leads to ancient symbols painted on a large boulder by the prehistoric Kumeyaay tribe. Then I continued another 1/4 mile down a wash to the cool shade of Smuggler Canyon and an expansive view of the Vallecito Valley below.During this 1 1/2-hour hike, I saw nobody else on the trail. By 9:30 a.m., as I neared the end of the hike, it was already 85 degrees. I was glad I had parked my car in the shade of a huge boulder.From Blair Valley, I took Highway 78 east through Anza-Borrego toward Joshua Tree National Park. Near Anza-Borrego’s eastern boundary, the flaming red blooms of the ocotillos were just popping out.I checked into my Joshua Tree lodging later that afternoon. The next morning I drove into the park. Once again, early is the key; at 7 a.m. there were only a few cars ahead of me at the entrance gate. The Joshua trees were in full bloom. The huge white flowers look like cauliflowers on steroids.Wrapping up my trip in Joshua Tree, I drove south towards Cholla Gardens, where I found marvelous spreads of wildflowers — mostly around desert washes — including the bright pink flowers of beaver-tail cactus.If you plan to visit Anza-Borrego Desert State Park or Joshua Tree National Park, be sure to check out their websites first for wildflower updates.You don’t have to make that long haul to see wildflowers, you can enjoy a later bloom here in Santa Cruz County. Late holiday offers a boost

Dutch Hill Chocolates owner Jerry Moore.Easter is the top holiday season for candy sales at Blair Candy Co., said Mike Dandrea, director of sales.One of Blair Candy’s biggest sellers is Zitner’s Butter Krak Eggs.“They were featured on a show on the Travel Channel, and the next morning we had 200 orders for them on our website. We are one of the main distributors of the Butter Krak Eggs. We have already gone through a couple of thousand boxes of them. We sell out each year. We sold out of them around April 1,” Dandrea said.Consumers are expected to spend $1.2 billion on Easter flowers.Easter is not as big of a flower holiday as it was 10 to 15 years ago, said Andrea Hammel, owner of Peterman’s Flower Shop.“As far as potted plants, there is so much competition. Things like centerpieces and whimsical spring arrangements sell pretty good for the holiday. People like very colorful, bright flowers like tulips and daffodils, anything that will scream spring,” Hammel said.Easter is important to Sunrise Floral and Gifts, owner Dawn Amrhein said.“We have hyacinths, tulips and Easter lilies. We also do centerpieces for Easter tables. It is not one of our bigger holidays, but we want people to make it big. We want people to buy flowers for Easter,” Amrhein said.While Easter is also not one of the biggest holidays for Warner’s Florists Gifts Greenhouses, Hollidays­burg, the store is still busy.“A lot of our Easter business is plants for churches; that is a focus of ours. Field day: After a winter that was like spring, local crops ripen early ...

Wednesday.A stream of visitors and conversations followed.“Good to see you,” said Joan Rudd, motioning to Blair Flowers who was there with one of her children. “Where’s the rest of your gang?”Flowers likes going into the Rudd’s strawberry field with her family so they can pick their own, but couldn’t resist getting some of the early berries.“Just really, really good,” Flowers said.Nearby, Howard Ayers had a confession.“I’m not supposed to eat any, but I slip a few here and there,” said Ayers, who grew up near the farm.Charita Williams could have stopped at grocery stores on the way here.“I’d rather get them fresh, so I know where they came from,” Williams said.Harry Harrelson came from Reidsville to pick up some for his wife.Earlier in the week, the Rudds updated their Facebook page to say that they would open at 10 a.m. for just a day and until they ran out.But by 9:46 a.m., most of what they had was gone, and Rudd was waiting for just a few more pallets to arrive from the fields.Those nights in the cold paid off.#ndn-video-player-3.ndn_embedded .ndn_floatContainer { margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 20px; }...
