Francis Pauline Jacobson

Francis Pauline Jacobson, age 99, passed away on Friday, Jan. 29, 2016, in her home in Ardmore, Oklahoma. A memorial service is being planned for this spring. Francis was born in Buffalo, Okla., on April 27, 1916, to Herbert A. Monhollon and Laura (Braly) Monhollon. When she was 13, her family moved to Edmond, Okla., where she graduated from Edmond High School. She attended Central State University and graduated with a degree in Math and Physical Education. She excelled in tennis, basketball, volleyball, swimming, and cheerleading while in college. She was awarded the Best Athlete Award in 1937. “Frankie” married C.E. “Tip” Jacobson when they were both sophomores at CSU. She began her teaching career in Tulsa. During World War II, she taught math and science, ran the swimming pool, and drove the school bus in Canon City, Colorado. After coaching jobs in Waurika, Chandler, and Hobart, the Jacobsons landed in Ardmore in 1950, where Fran began a long career with the Ardmore Public Schools. Nature had a great friend in Ralph Shaw

Born on June 20, 1926 in High’s Stopping House, Ardmore (halfway between Cold Lake and Bonnyville, Alta.) to a pioneer family who trapped and fished for a living, Shaw came by his outdoor skills naturally. He fished, trapped and hunted with his brothers. His fishing career started when he was about six years old. When he was about 13, Shaw’s family moved to trout country, where his career as a master fly fisherman began. Shaw’s father had a sound conservation ethic, which encouraged his own interest in fish and wildlife conservation practices. While a teacher and principal in Kamloops, Shaw helped establish the McQueen Lake Environmental Centre, 16 kilometres north of Kamloops. It is today owned by the Kamloops-Thompson school district and used by classes for field trips. Shaw worked for the Simon Fraser University Summer Institute at McQueen Lake, specializing in wilderness survival and outdoor skills. During the 1960s and 1970s, he spoke throughout North America on conservation and outdoor education. Shaw was a contributing member of several conservation groups and a founder of several more. He was involved in the B.C. Wildlife Federation, receiving the Ted Barsby Award as Conservationist of the Year in 1984 and the President’s Awards for his work on saltwater fisheries in 1990. Verna Lee Wilson Williams

Verna married Charles F. “Charlie” Williams on Dec. 22, 1969, and they had just celebrated their 46th anniversary. After moving back to Ardmore in the early 60s, she worked for American Flyers, Stromberg Carlson, and Ardmore Manufacturing as well as owning VLW Research. Verna retired in 1995 to help raise her grandchildren and nieces which gave her great pleasure. She was affectionately known as grandma to all of them as well as most of the neighborhood children and always had cookies and suckers. Verna’s greatest passion was genealogy and would spend hours searching for that one link to another branch of her family tree. She was a 20 year volunteer in the library at the Greater Southwest Museum where she was known to have the location of everything memorized and if she couldn’t find it, it wasn’t there. She found great joy in helping someone find a lost ancestor. We joked that if you talked to her for 15 minutes, she would figure out you were related. Her love of genealogy led her into membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Colonists, Colonial Dames, National Society United States Daughters of 1812, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Greater Southwest Historical Museum. She was also a past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star and member of the Elkettes. Verna and Charles traveled the country in later years and toured all of the lower 48 states visiting many ...
