Feb 3, 2016Orchid Extravaganza on display through March 27 at Longwood Gardens
I had everything planned out. This is certainly not what I thought I would be doing’’ Griffis, a West Chester native, says.
But while he was in college studying music education, he saw an orchid that belonged to a friend and was intrigued by its beauty.
When he learned that the flower thrives in the rainforest by growing on trees, “it blew me away,’’ he says.
And since there was an orchid nursery near his house, he visited, not just once or twice, but over and over again. “There was so much diversity,’’ he says. “The more I knew the more I thought this was the most spectacular thing ever.’’
Eventually, Griffis got a part-time job there as he finished his college career. After graduation, he became the nursery’s full-time grower.
From there, he got an offer from a wholesale orchid nursery in Hawaii, and then Longwood called.
Griffis’ love affair with the orchid is still going strong, and Longwood’s Orchid Extravaganza is his chance to share it with visitors.
There are 30,000 species of orchid and they grow on every continent except Antarctica.
Orchids, he says, have “amazing flower designs to attract pollinators. They are so beautiful. They have a much more distinct shape than other flowers.”
And then there’s that growing in air thing... .
