Dawn Lowe Obituary - Bloomington, IL | The Pantagraph - Legacy.com

There will be a visitation from 3-5 PM at the Memorial Home Saturday. Interment will be later at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield. Dawn was born March 7, 1926, in Milwaukee, WI to Henry and Marie Koktavy Thomsen. She married Rev. Donald L. Lowe on August 12, 1951, in Beloit, WI. He preceded her in death on December 16, 2019 in Normal. She is also preceded in death by one sister, Marilyn Helm. Dawn is survived by two daughters, Debra Sasveld of Naperville, Dauna (Mark) Delashmit of Bloomington, six grandchildren, Jessica (Tom) Carpy, Kelsey Sasveld, Zack Delashmit, Hallie (Robert) Bartlett, Lucas Sasveld, Sadie Delashmit, two great-grandchildren Raegan Bartlett and Abigail Carpy, and one sister LaVerne Wolgast of North Tonawanda, NY. Dawn was an Elementary Teacher for thirty-five years mostly in Southern Illinois, including the towns of Bunker Hill, Gillespie, Vandalia, Mount Vernon, Harrisburg, and last teaching in Collinsville Unit District 10, retiring in 1986. After retirement she substitute taught at Christ the King School in Springfield. When she wasn't teaching, she and her husband partnered well for many years in the churches he pastored, with Dawn working in Christian Education and Children's ministry. They were very proud of the years they spent at Sugar Creek Methodist Church in Springfield where they were part of an outreach team whose motto was "Place for Beginning, Becoming...

Hartman says. In 2017, Hartman invested $24,000 to start a mobile flower shop dubbed Ozark Mtn Flower Truck. She sells locally grown flowers around Springfield out of a 1970 Volkswagen single-cab truck. Sales have been blooming since, she says. The business generated $120,000 in 2018 revenue, and she says it’s on pace for $150,000 this year. Hartman says social media has been a crucial asset to running her mobile business and creating a brand. Customers can follow the truck on Instagram, Facebook and on its website for times, dates and locations. “From the beginning, people would share photos of themselves at the flower truck, and we’re known for wrapping our bouquets in brown craft paper,” she says. “That helped spread the word.” Local rootsHartman tries to keep her business as locally oriented as possible. The truck’s main flower supplier is Millsap Farms LLC, and she also buys product from C-Street Flowers LLC. When she can’t find a specific bloom from local growers, she uses wholesalers, such as Mears Floral Products Inc. and Baisch & Skinner Inc. The truck currently carries mums, strawflowers, zinnias, celosias, sunflowers, dahlias and gomphrena flowers. Hartman says the sunflower is most popular. This year, Hartman started growing some of her own flowers. Strubbe’s green thumb sprouted as a young boy living on a farm outside Springfield, Ill. He built a sanctuary of green on a plot beside the outdoor toilets.Strubbe spent 25 years of his adult life teaching religion, English and social studies at Ascension Lutheran School in Torrance.At age 48, his career swerved and he moved to St. Louis for a few years to attend a seminary. He returned to Southern California as a pastor at Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Lake Forest and then Christ Lutheran Church in Costa Mesa.Since childhood, his love for plants has entwined with his love for God.“It’s such a miracle,” he said. “God takes those itty bitty seeds … you look at those plants and you just see him.” Joseph Strubbe holds a tomatillo he grew in his home garden. That is a lot.”Strubbe usually attends the fair at least twice a week during its run: on Tuesday mornings to drop off two carloads of entries for the week’s competitions and on Wednesdays to see how he fared with the judges. Occasionally, he said, he overhears passersby discussing his work.“People will say, ‘Who’s this Joseph Strubbe? He needs to get a life!’ ” Strubbe said with a laugh.He sometimes worries that people will get the wrong impression and be too intimidated to try gardening themselves. Sara Perez-Ekanger's road to "flower lady" status may have begun with a Springfield, Missouri big-box-store peace lily named Alejandro that she bought for her college dorm room.Or it could have been the exotic flora she encountered in El Salvador (the country of her parents’ birth), Nicaragua, Guatemala or the other Central American locales to which her work as a translator for missionary groups brought her.
