Talk about the joy of communication!And, in the case of this week’s column, a colorful garden leads to curious passersby, new community connections and an enduring sense of purpose.Meet Lisa Owen Perry of Lyndhurst, who had the creativity to plant flowers outside her apartment. Is she a landscape designer?No.Is she in charge of the grounds?No.Perry is a creative resident with an idea that she brought to fruition. Lots of good ideas never get implemented. It is way too early to hibernate. In fact, a new journey of discovery may just be beginning. At Lyndhurst Garden Club at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 7, the topic of "Ikebana Design" will captivate Hillcrest-area gardeners. Emily Viland, speaker, has been a gardener all her life. She is both a flower arranger and judge for flower shows. She is also a member of Ikebana International and Ohara school of Ikebana.Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arrangement, also known as kado or "the way of flowers." The tradition stems far back, to the 7th century, when floral offerings adorned altars.A deepening appreciation of Japanese art and architecture in the West is blooming.
