Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds to the greenhouse, and we’ll have games for the kids, and the food truck will be on the site,” Del McComb said.McComb, the director of horticulture and production manager, said that Suncrest Nursery has been in operation for twenty seven years, and offers 3500 varieties for the wholesale market on its 90 acres. One specialty is Californian Native Plants, with one example he gave, the ceanothos plant that the layman called, California lilacs.“It is not the lilac that is known further east, but this one has clusters of blue flowers.“I love plants,” McComb gave the reason for his interest in his work.“We are the most diverse nursery in California,” he said. This includes edible plants such as blueberries.Suncrest Nurseries is just one stop on this year’s Monterey Bay Greenhouse Growers Open House. The participating nurseries are only open to the public on one day during the year, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, June 17.The annual event attracts plant lovers from all over Northern California. They come with empty trunks and hope to leave filled to capacity with exotic orchids, gerbera daisies, citrus trees, bouquets of roses, some produce and an enthusiasm for growing plants. Proceeds from the sale benefit the greenhouse owners favorite charities. Peggy Billings: Missionary, Justice Worker, Poet

Billings’ path to this place has been filled with adventure, good works and poetry. Born in 1928, the youngest of nine children, Billings was born in McComb, Mississippi, on the Louisiana border, the daughter of a railroad man and a homemaker. She recalls that when the Depression struck, her father’s salary was reduced but he was able to keep on working. The family moved out to Carter’s Creek “way out in the country,“ she said. “Both my parents knew how to work on a farm and raise food and animals, so we were able to support ourselves that way through the Depression,” she said. “I had a happy childhood. She attended Millsaps College in Mississippi as a pre-med major, with support from... (Ithaca Journal)
