'Victoria Longwood' water lilies at Hudson Gardens in Littleton are a pretty big deal -

The Water Gardens and surrounding ponds at Hudson Gardens in Littleton display more than 140 varieties of aquatic plants, which serve as a cover for a variety of minnows, tadpoles and other small critters. With a minimum amount of patience, one can spot a frog sitting on a floating leaf, and in the evening those frogs sing and serenade the surroundings. The large leaves of the Victoria water lily provide an especially fine perch for these small pond critters as they also offer shade for the swimming residents of the ponds. Each leaf can grow 10 inches in a day, according to material provided at the Gardens. The Victoria water lilies were discovered in Bolivia in 1801 and are only native to South American river basins, such as the Amazon. Botanists and plant collectors were bringing them to Europe by the mid-19th century, where the first display was at Britain's Crystal Palace. In 1851, specimens were also introduced in the U.S. In 1960, Longwood Gardens, near Philadelphia, introduced the “Victoria Longwood,” which is the variet...

Nothing Says ‘I Love You’ Like Secondhand Roses - The New York Times

So Ms. Lubell created a second company, Garbage Goddess, which provides eco-cleanup services for events in New York City, the Hamptons, the Hudson Valley and soon, Los Angeles. “We try to find alternative homes for everything,” she said. “We look at recycling as our last resort.” Her goal is to have less than two bags of garbage for each event.Often, Garbage Goddess will donate event flowers to textile designers like Cara Piazza, who uses the flowers to make natural dyes in her Brooklyn studio.“One bouquet from a wedding will get you a scarf and a kimono,” Ms. Piazza said. “I will get nine massive garbage bags full of flowers from events that will last me a month.”“Flower repurposing is one of the biggest things happening in the events industry right now,” said Nicki Fleischner, the founder of Plan with Purpose, a website that showcases ethically-minded event vendors. “There are more companies coming out of the woodwork all the time.”“Flower repurposing is one of the biggest things happening in the events industry right now.”Credit...Brittainy Newman/The New York TimesJennifer Grove, an event planner, started...

And little by little, I came back.”In 2017, he started up the business again and the rest is history. Dedicated to a healthy lifestyle at 58, Bobby now lives in Weehawken and makes the easy commute to the Hoboken storefront almost every day.See More: Bwè Kafe Opens New Location with Little City Books and Park + Bloom UptownHow He Got into FloristryBobby learned the art of floristry from his father Robert, who he worked with for over 30 years. He said right after dinner, his mother would tell him and his older siblings to go help their dad with the flowers. “It taught us all a great work ethic,” Bobby said. “And all my brothers and sisters translated that into what they do today.”Similar to Bobby’s trajectory, Bobby’s oldest son is coming to learn the ropes of the floral industry from him in August 2020 so the legacy of Bobby Flowers NYC can live on.
