Historic Daytona Beach flower shop suffers extensive damage after electrical fire - WKMG News 6 & ClickOrlando

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – If you live in Daytona Beach, the retro green and pink sign outside Zahn’s Flowers will be a familiar sight. Owner Leah Mihalko said it’s been a part of the community for nearly 100 years, originally owned by the Zahn family.“My grandparents bought the store from the Zahn family in the 70s... His family later moved to Piqua, Ohio, where he graduated from Piqua Central High School in 1976. In 1983, he graduated from the University of Dayton with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. He joined Hensel Phelps Construction Company March 1986 working on local projects including the Union Colony Civic Center and Northern Colorado Medical Center as well as many long-term projects around the country, before retiring in 2013. Dave enjoyed golfing, reading, traveling, working in the yard, and gardening. He had a passion for cooking and his friends and family were always the recipients of his herb and tomato creations. Dave loved his time volunteering at NCMC along with his work with the Aims Community Foundation. Dave is survived by his wife, Leslie (Gordon Grissom) Strode, whom he married Aug. 22, 2014; adored children and grandchildren, Lydia (Heath) Boyes, Kennedy, Kambrie, and Emma, Micah (Katelyn) Strode and Ava; brother, Mark (Jill) Strode; nephews, Jackson and Cooper; stepchildren, Zachary Grissom, Jeremy (Katie) Grissom; Porter and Anson, Jessica (Casey) Roberts, Taegan, Caden, and Brogan, Jacob (Tia) Grissom; Bradly and Waylon. Thelxy (Rallis) Nichols. He graduated from Lewiston High and then joined the Navy to serve during World War II. He was stationed on the USS Dayton. Upon return from the service, he attended the University of Maine and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering.During his extensive career as an engineer, he collaborated on many projects with architects, as well as national and local contractors, where he oversaw the construction phase of projects for paper mills, power plants, schools, hospitals and municipal buildings. One of his career highlights was managing the installation of the entire security system at the George H.W. Bush Estate in Kennebunkport, Maine, during Vice-President Bush’s tenure.George was an active and long-time member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Lewiston, Maine, where he served on the Parish Council for more than 35 years. He donated his services for the architectural design of the current Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Lewiston, Maine, as well as the supervision of the ongoing construction, and served as general contractor. For his service to the community, he was recognized as a recipient of the Diocese Laity Award by Metropolitan Methodios, of the Boston Diocese. George also served as President of the George C. Funeral services set for Nick DiSalvo, co-owner of Mamma DiSalvo’s Italian Ristorante - dayton.com

Shanon Morgan, president of the Miami Valley Restaurant Association, said Nick DiSalvo’s passing is a loss to the Dayton-area restaurant community. “The DiSalvo family is such a pillar in the Kettering area, and we are fortunate to have had Mamma DiSalvo’s wonderful restaurant in our community for the past 40 years,” Morgan said. “Many of us will truly miss the warm smile that Nick always greeted friends with — often followed by a big hug and kiss. I’m confident that his love for his family, friends and restaurant will continue to shine through.” Family members wrote in Mr. DiSalvo’s obituary that Nick was “passionate about his restaurant business and studying the bible. He loved fishing, attending church, and Bill's donuts. Nick enjoyed sports and was a huge fan of the Bengals, Cubs, and OSU football. Nick loved his boys and family beyond measure.
