Unseasonably warm weather tricks nature; flowers blooming, wildlife awakening ...

Geauga County grower Bill Patterson of the Patterson Fruit Farm in Chesterland said the strawberry plants and the apple and peach trees in his orchard are dormant, safe and not blooming prematurely. But nature has a way of biting back, such as when he lost his entire peach crops each of the past two years from deep freezes. "For every day below freezing you gain a degree of hardiness for your trees," Patterson said. "But for every day above freezing you lose a degree of hardiness. Unless things turn on us quickly, we feel pretty protected." Just when we were getting used to this balmy December weather, the forecasters are predicting a chance of snow showers and highs in the 30s and 40s over the weekend. But not to worry. We should be back up to the mid-50s by Tuesday, the forecasters say. (cleveland.com)
