Filoli, Conservatory of Flowers all aglow for the holidays - Marin Independent Journal
This year, for an early glimpse of a stylish holiday season, I headed down to Woodside to see the glowing gardens of Filoli and tour the gorgeous Gilded Age mansion’s main floor.
Filoli, built in 1917 as a private residence, is now a nonprofit open to the public. It’s considered to be one of the finest remaining country estates of the 20th century. Its highlights include a 54,000-square-foot Georgian Revival-style mansion, 16 acres of English Renaissance gardens, an almost seven-acre gentleman’s orchard and a nature preserve with more than seven miles of hiking trails.
It’s always gorgeous, but it really does take on an extra measure of sumptuousness at Christmastime.
For those who want to slip away from the hustle and bustle of the season, it’s a great place to see beautifully decorated rooms, stroll manicured gardens, catch up over lunch, enjoy live music and performances, shop for pretty Filoli-inspired home and garden gifts, and let children meet Santa Claus.
“Filoli is truly a magical place, especially during the holidays, and we are excited this year to offer even more opportunities to visit,” Kara Newport, Filoli’s chief executive officer, says in a recent press release. “We are e... Dec 14, 2018

Volunteers band together to revive recycled-bouquet program
Klause said. But in some cases the used flowers are not fresh enough for a second life and must be discarded.
Volunteer Sandra Bachman, a Woodside resident, said her favorite place to deliver is Stanford University Hospital.
"To go in and see patients that do not have any flowers or visitors and walk in with a bouquet and for five minutes they forget about their problems," Bachman said. "They open their eyes and to get that smile, and to hear through that family what a difference that can make for healing ... A lot of the nurses say it helps them heal. It brings the outside in, the sunshine in."

Thieves target flowers at cemeteries
MIDDLETOWN, Ohio -- How could someone steal from a cemetery? The director at Woodside Cemetery in Middletown said they've seen more cemetery thefts this year than in the past, with thieves making off with flowers and vases made of precious metals like brass, bronze and aluminum. The Middletown-based Granger Plastics Company has come up with one solution. They make vases from polyethlyn, which Shawn Cravens said can withstand the elements and still look good as part of a memorial. Watch the video above to learn more about the problem and see what's being done to address it.
