Wildflower pop-up full of floral fantasy

Decorating Falkirk A few weeks ago, Boy Scout Troop 50 from San Anselmo and Sleepy Hollow, gathered once again at the Falkirk Cultural Center, as it has for at least five Decembers, to dress up one of San Rafael’s grandest Grande Dames for the holiday season. Matthew Baldwin, Trevor Stafford, Jensen Merten, Riley Greenwood, Max Gehm, Aidan Ng, Devin Brown, Aaron Andrew Aranha, Raul Rodarte-Garcia, and Shayne Rebbetoy joined with scoutmaster Brendan Laing to deck the mansions halls with color and old-fashioned charm. Advertisement Earning community service time, but not badges, they helped the Cultural Affairs Service League women who have been longtime volunteer decorators and event producers at Falkirk for several decades. Senior patrol leader Oliver Merten of San Anselmo and a senior at Sir Francis Drake High School, says he took up scouting for its backpacking and camping adventures, but enjoys this decorating day. “It’s nice to spend just one day on a weekend and then be able to drive past and see all the decorations in this wonderful old building and know that you helped to do that.” Visitors are welcome to visit Falkirk to see the decorations through Jan. 7; hours vary. Falkirk Cultural Center is at 1408 Mission Ave. in San Rafael. For information, call 415-485-3328 or go to www.falkirkculturalcenter.org. Breathe in the beauty of autumn starting right now. Take a walk around Phoenix Lake and soak up the colors. Step out on the Sleepy Hollow Divide for breathtaking views. Trek deep into Madrone Canyon to witness the forest floor spongy with big leaf maple leaves. Before you know it, the colors will have faded into the earth and winter will be upon us. The UC Marin Master Gardener column is written by UC Marin Master Gardeners, who are sponsored by the University of California Cooperative Extension. 5 ways to give Mom an oh-so-Michigan Mother's Day

Ingham County parks, but you can still take a 1-1/2 mile stroll at Hawk Island or hit the mountain bike trail at Burchfield Park. Sleepy Hollow State Park near Laingsburg has 16 miles of trails; bring binoculars to look for birds. Eaton County Parks don’t have events scheduled on Mother’s Day itself, but you could take Mom on one of the park system’s wildflower walks. The naturalist-led walks are at 5 p.m. May 4th at Fitzgerald Park, 5 p.m. May 12 at Lincoln Brick Park, 7:30 p.m. May 14 at Fox Park and 7 p.m. May 24 at Bennett Park. Walks are suitable for all ages; fee is $2 per person or $5 per family. Learn more at www.eatoncounty.org. Stroll across the MSU campus and enjoy flowering trees with a stop at the Dairy Store in Anthony Hall for some ice cream. Those are just a few suggestions; any state, county or city park will do.
