On the American side of the lake, there are about a dozen gardens from Niagara Falls to Oswego. The gardens are open 24/7 and are free.
"When you walk in the garden and you read the history and you think about it, it's a peaceful feeling," Toal said.
It’s a feeling she hopes will inspire others to make the world a better place.

Mar 30, 2017BRADBERRY: Roses crush snapdragons in vote for city flower
Timm, City Historian reminded me of my mother’s affection for roses when she showed me a copy of a story that appeared here on the pages of the Niagara Falls Gazette as the paper was known in 1933.Apparently, my mother was not the only rose aficionado on May 23, 1933 when this headline graced the front-page of our hometown newspaper, “Rose Selected as City’s Official Flower in City-wide Vote Contest”.According to the story, roses received 9,607 ballots out of a total of 16,512 cast; Snapdragons won second place with 1,456 votes, Delphinium came in third.Tulips, pansies, rounded out the field.Yes, you read the numbers right, 16,512 votes cast for flowers. That’s amazing when you consider fewer than half that number show up to vote for anything anymore. The story reads, “The rose was nominated on May 10, 1933 by E.C. M. Jenes, local rose expert because of its wide range of colors, its fragrance and its long blooming qualities. Another local rose expert has since stated that he believes that “dormant” stock planted now, will bloom this year from July to September.”As we continue to awaken from our decades long slumber, wouldn’t it be nice to smell the fresh sweet scent of roses here again? Why not celebrate our 125th anniversary as the City of Niagara Falls by, among other things, gifting ourselves by planting roses again! All over the city, in every public garden, at every school and public building let there be roses. Niagara Falls could, with a little help, become the “City of Roses” of New York state!By the way, the rose of any color or combination of colors was designated as the official state flower of New York in 1955.The rose is a symbol of love and beauty, as well as war and politics all over the world.Says one of many websites devoted to the precious rose, “our national flower, has been around for about 35 million years and grows naturally throughout North America. The petals and rose hips are edible and have been used in medicines since ancient times. Rose hips, the fruit of the rose which forms at base of the flower, are eaten in winter by wild birds and other animals.I’m no horticulturalist, barely have a green thumb, but like many, I do enjoy being in the dirt in springtime. There is somethi... Oct 27, 2016Masks cannot hide Carol and Josh's love
Heading home, the newlyweds detoured briefly to Niagara Falls, then settled – finally together – in New York. In April, Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine accepted Carol. Again, they would team up long-distance until Josh caould transfer.
“We enjoy and like to do the same things,” Carol said, refocusing their creative outlook. “I love having someone I actually miss when he’s not around. I’ve never been a person to keep up with old friendships. I make new friends. Josh is the first person I have ever truly missed.”
