The 2018 Holiday Gift Guide for New York City Food Lovers - Eater NY

Dollop dish Inspired by oyster shells, each of these small dishes - perfect for holding spices, garnishes, sauces, or even rings - is one of a kind. Long Island City artist Nicole Pilar adheres to the philosophy of wabi-sabi, a Japanese view of embracing the imperfect, and small-scale ceramics allow her to employ it in utensils. Restaurants like Gabriel Kreuther and Blanca use her craggly serveware, which brings an organic feel into kitchens. 2017 Valentine's Day gift and travel guide

Timex, Dakota Watch Company and Long Island City’s own Armitron produce plenty of timepieces for less than $125. Forest Hills High School alum Lawrence Leyderman created his own watch company, House of Horology (hohwatches.com), which produces chronometers that rival Tag Heuer and Omega but at a fraction of their cost. Woodside’s iconic Bulova also makes fashionable and durable watches in the $400 to $800 range. Handbags and totes are always useful. Flushing native Crystal Kodada (crystalkodada.com) is a newcomer to the high-end leather handbag business but her line tends to be a bit larger in size than most of her competitors’ and there are a lot of zippered compartments for secured storage. Ameribag makes ergonomically correct backpacks that come in hot pink and red to the more muted navy blue and black and retail anywhere from $50 to $75. Darby Scott, Black Sea Collection, Judith Leiber and Jill Haber make high-end over-the-shoulder handbags. Haber’s line can double as works of art. For those on tighter budgets, Buxton (buxton.co) and Deux Lux make totes, billfolds and passport and credit card holders. Cosmetics are tricky items for guys to purchase for women for a number of reasons. But if you know which shade the lady in your life loves then you can’t go wrong with lipsticks from Ulta Lip Gloss, Be Yu, Hard Candy, NVEY Eco, Essence, Shiseido, Mineral Fusion, Kiko Milano and especially Sephora. These days skin care products have become almost as popular for men as they are for women. With good jobs tougher to find as we age, no one wants to look older than he or she has to, even those who aren’t the slightest bit vain. In addition, everyone is more aware of the dangers of the sun than we were even just a few years ago. Moisturizers, serums and sun-fighting products from CeraVe, Columbia Skin Cares and the humorously named Kiss My Face are all recommended. June Jacobs produces specialty skin care items such as an anti-aging lip treatment and a detoxifying masque, while Kiehl’s, which has been around since 1851, makes a ton of skin products including its Ultra Facial Cream. For those who have the time to invest in looking as youthful as possible, Tammy Fender (tammyfender.com) has an entire at-home regimen kit for the truly dedicated. Men also have been taking an increasing market share in the fragrance industry. Ralph Lauren’s Polo Red and Diesel’s Fuel for Men are popular fragrances. Former Jackson Heights resident and now LA transplant Tara Durkin has an excellent men’s fragrance called Dossage 8. There are obviously thousands of perfumes for women. I am not sure how good it is but I have to chuckle at the name of House of Matriarch’s big seller, Sex Magic. That rivals the Sex on the Beach perfume from Long Island-based Demeter Fragrances, whose CEO is die-hard Mets fan Mark Cram... (Queens Chronicle)

Mother's Day gift and travel guide

Watches are the most popular form of jewelry, and the great news is that companies such as Timex, Fossil, Dakota and Long Island City’s own Armitron produce quality timepieces for under $75 that look as if they cost three times that amount. If you are willing to spend more to get a high quality timepiece, the House of Horology (hohwatches.com), founded by Forest Hills High School alum Lawrence Leyderman, has watches that are every bit as good as Rolex and Tag Heuer but have a price that is not even half of those respected high-end brands. Another high-end timepiece alternative are the collections from Bulova, a company which for years made its headquarters in Woodside. Handbags are always popular. Vera Bradley is known for its lively cloth pocketbooks and weekend duffels. State Bags (statebags.com) makes inexpensive totes and duffel bags which are very functional for weekend getaways. Eric Javits manufactures clutches and wallets that range from $100 to $300 and can be purchased at Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom’s and Saks, as well as at ericjavits.com. Laudi Vidni (laudividni.com), which is the word individual spelled backwards, has cross body bags in the same price range as Eric Javits’ leather goods. Italian designer Pablo Baldini (pablobaldini.com) makes lively colored leather bags in the slightly higher $250 to $400 ballpark, while Jemma (jemmabag.com) makes more conservative handbags for around $350. If mom loves going to the beach, Paige Gamble (paigegamble.com) makes fun summery totes to take to the shore. There is no shortage of perfumes on the market, but choosing the right one is not easy. Sephora has a gift box that the company smartly calls “Favorites,” which contains perfumes from Dolce & Gabbana and Versace. Former Jackson Heights resident Tara Durkan started a fragrance company in LA, Dossage, and Dossage 8 for Her is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to Chanel No. 5. There was a time when one might feel self-conscious using any kind of skin care product. Not anymore. These days folks of all ages are using anti-wrinkle cremes and anti-aging serums. There is no shortage of quality producers of these products, and that has led to competitive pricing in a very upscale industry. Environ has a gift set in honor of its 25th anniversary (dermaconcepts.com) that includes masque, hydrating oils, eye gel and hand cremes for $250. VENeffect, Cosmedicine and Bliss World all make anti-aging cremes and serums, while CeraVe makes numerous hydrating cleansers and moisturizing lotions. Mineral Fusion is quietly rivaling Avon, Maybelline and Estee Lauder as a full-service manufacturer of beauty products as it makes its own line of lipsticks, eye shadow, mascara, moisturizers, body lotions and shampoos. Hair products are a tricky purchase because nearly everyone is particular about what they want to use on or for their scalp. Conair, Drybar and Rusk make hair driers and curling irons that make hair look fuller, as do shampoos such as Grande Hair Nutra Peptide, Austin Kyle and Pau... (Queens Chronicle)
