Dromm, Residents Honor Memory Jackson Heights Florist

She was 72.And although he learned a lot about the business from his mom, he won't be able to keep the shop open without her connections and eye for design, he said."You have to be an artist to do this," Ho, 46, said in the final weeks of the shop, as neighbors came in to say goodbye — many buying plants to remember both him and his mother. Ho tried to keep the store open, including letting a pop-up floral shop spend weekends at the store last fall. But he said he simply doesn't have the same passion for it his mom had.On Friday, Councilman Danny Dromm honored Lee's memory with a citation from the City Council, celebrating her life and business at the shop on 84th Street and 37th Avenue they moved into a few years ago...

Ralph Lauren’s Polo Red and Diesel’s Fuel for Men are popular fragrances. Former Jackson Heights resident and now LA transplant Tara Durkin has an excellent men’s fragrance called Dossage 8. There are obviously thousands of perfumes for women. I am not sure how good it is but I have to chuckle at the name of House of Matriarch’s big seller, Sex Magic. That rivals the Sex on the Beach perfume from Long Island-based Demeter Fragrances, whose CEO is die-hard Mets fan Mark Crames. Safer name choices in the perfume world are Revlon’s Love Is On Eau de Toilette and Elizabeth Arden’s Always Red. Ralph Lauren makes a fragrance gift set that includes a box of Dylan’s Chocolates while Viktor & Rolf’s Flowerbomb gift set includes parfum, shower gel and body cream. Lampe Berger Paris’ Cocoon Boxed Set contains has what it calls an Ocean Breeze Home Fragrance in a stylish satin glass case. Valentine’s Day, like Halloween, is a day when, barring serious health issues, we can look the other way when it comes to sugar consumption. Godiva and See Candies make tasty chocolates, but I have to admit to a special fondness for Ghirardelli’s peppermint bark and caramel squares. Chocolate Covered Cherries and Vermont Nut-Free Chocolates (vermontnutfree.com) are perfect for anyone who might have allergies to nuts of any kind. Josh Aryeh, a Queens Hatzolah Ambulance volunteer driver, started Fruits in Chocolate (FruitsInChocolate.com) just across the Nassau County border in Inwood, LI, three years ago. As the company name indicates, Aryeh’s company places pieces of fresh fruit inside premium dark chocolate. They are kosher and are sold at a wide variety of retailers. The southern part of the United States has always been known for great desserts. Brennan’s of Houston makes these soft praline pieces that remind you of the delicious fudge that you find in Atlantic City. Whoopie pies are a southern treat, but the sweetest that I have ever tasted are those from Wicked Whoopies (wickedwhoopies.com), surprisingly made in Freeport, Maine, a Portland suburb famous for its outlet shopping. Former investment banker Liz Fife recently started a New York-based company, Batter & Cream (batterandcream.com), that specializes in whoopie pies. Cheryl’s (cheryls.com) has a Valentine’s Day gift box of its popular cookies while Harry & David’s has gift baskets of its popular Moose Munch popcorn as well as its many other confections. Couples who are coffee drinkers and who don’t mind a touch of saccharine kitsch should purchase Care Bears his and hers mugs. For the spirits industry, Valentine’s Day ranks just behind New Year’s Eve in terms of sales numbers. Liqueurs such as Godiva Dark Chocolate Liqueur, Baileys Old Irish Creme, Kahlua and Baileys Salted Caramel and Baileys recent creation, Espresso Café Creme, are safe bets. France is renowned for red wine but Calvados Boulard is a fine brandy from its Normandy region. Ireland now has competition in the cream liqueur industry as evidenced by South Africa’s Amarula Cream. Sparkling wines such as France’s Lillet Rose and Italy’s Banfi Rosa Regale are also synonymous with romance. If you want a slight sweet touch to somewhat harder alcohol, try Smirnoff Wild Honey Vodka or Balvenie Caribbean Cork. If you prefer smooth over sweet, Glenfiddich 12, Macallan, Usquaebach and Johnnie Walker Black Label (the Blue Label will cost you over $200) are great options in the scotch whisky market. View Full Caption Tilde Floral JACKSON HEIGHTS — A new floral shop pop-up hopes to bring unique arrangements to the neighborhood, teaming up with a florist shop that's been open for more than 40 years.  Joanne Yun works in education tech during the day, but her passion is flowers — and she's turned her growing hobby into a weekend pop-up shop at Ho Florists, at 84-23 37th Ave. Yun opened Tilde Floral at the beginning of September, taking pre-orders where shoppers can share their color inspiration for their dream mix of flowers. The shop sells varying sizes of bouquets, ranging from $8 to upwards of $75, depending on size. And although she has her own style, she's looking forward to seeing what her neighbors like.  "It's been super empowering to be able to learn from great florists and to do it on my own," she said. "I want to make sure people are happy but I'm definitely putting my own stamp on things." Say it with flowers at the Festival de las Flores

Queens Botanical Garden Sunday. Activities will continue through July 10, when there will be a parade in Jackson Heights and a concert at Forest Hills Stadium. According to organizers, this year’s festival is the biggest ever. Expect lots of beautiful flowers, along with silletas—large, 6-foot medallions that are handcrafted with natural flowers by native Silleteros from Antioquia in northwestern Colombia. The Desfile de Silleteros, a parade through downtown Medellin, Antioquia’s capital, is still a highlight of their Flower Festival, and has attracted crowds since 1957. The festival made its way to New York City from Colombia in 2010. “The tradition evolved to what it is now and what is displayed in our Festival de las Flores, a festival that demonstrates the beauty of Colombia, as well as the different cultures that reside in New York City,” said Festival Director and President Luis Eduardo Acosta. “We began our organization in the hopes of spreading Colombian culture in New York by exhibiting one of the most beautiful crafts created in Antioquia, Colombia, and showcased at our Festival de las Flores, which are the silletas,” he said. Aside from the floral attractions, there will be lots more to see, hear and do at the festival. Saturday’s Multicultural Fest, which runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., will feature live music from both international and local artists, along with comedy group Caballo Loco, and much more. Foods from over 30 vendors will be available and the fest’s family-friendly activities will include ethnic crafts and face painting. Sunday’s celebration at the Queens Botanical Garden will go from noon to 5 p.m. It will offer attendees the chance to see completed floral creations and have their pictures taken with them. It will also feature live music, crafts, a bilingual story time for kids, and an art exhibit by Colombian visual artist Tatiana Arocha.
