Albany to hold a virtual Tulip Festival - Times Union

Tulip Festival. The 72-year-old tradition dates back to July 1, 1948 when Mayor Erastus Corning II passed a city ordinance declaring the tulip as Albany's official flower. In the spring of 1948, Albany officials asked Queen Wilhelmina of Holland to designate a variety of tulip to be Albany’s official flower. She chose the ‘Orange Wonder,’ a Mendel strain of tulip, now also known as the “The Tulip of Albany.” The city held its first Tulip Festival was held in May 1949. Harvard's Garden of Glass Flowers Blooms Again

An exhibition of their beautifully rendered jellyfish, octopi, anemones, and other creatures is currently on view at the Corning Museum of Glass. Harvard also displays Blaschka marine invertebrate models in its Museum of Comparative Zoology. Harvard’s Ware Collection of Blaschka Glass Models of Plants, named for Elizabeth C. and Mary Lee Ware, who financially supported its creation, debuted in own its gallery back in 1893. At the time, botanical models were made of papier-maché or wax and lacked the translucent qualities of living plants. To rectify this, George Lincoln Goodale, a Harvard professor and the first director of the school’s Botanical Museum, commissioned the Blaschkas to make the glass models in 1886. The flowers are considered the Blaschkas’ masterpiece, nicknamed the “Sistine Chapel of Glass” for their excellence. In her 1924 poem “Silence,” Marianne More cited her father, who would say: “Superior people never make long visits, / have to be shown Longfellow’s grave / or the glass flowers at Harvard.” Longfellow’s grave may not be quite as prestigious these days, but the flowers are perhaps more popular than ever. On a recent weekend visit, viewers lined nearly each case, peering through the glass at the leaves and petals, some rendered with realistic decay. Overall, the Victorian aesthetic of the old gallery — which was arranged a bit like a tactile herbarium — has been preserved, only now with better lighting, brighter walls, and less dust. The revamped cases are also more accessible so that the displays can be rotated. Pollinators are featured in the inaugural installation, and there are plans for the “rotten fruit” studies of plant disease to go on view in the future. Korean war, he enlisted in the Air Force and graduated from Officers’ Candidate School in 1953. He applied for an accounting position with Owens Corning, then Owens-Corning Fiberglas. From Kansas, he accepted a Toledo, Ohio, position, sight unseen. He worked for Owens Corning for 32 years in Toledo, Ohio, Newark, Ohio, Barrington, N.J., Huntingdon, Pa., and Battice, Belgium. His work assignments and traveling duties enabled him to travel widely in Europe and Brazil as well as in the U.S. He met and married Anne Irmen when they were in their 40s, and he was convinced that it was the smartest thing that he had ever done. They were able to retire early and to enjoy a long life together. He is survived by his wife, Anne, her family, and by many nieces and nephews. He was lovingly cared for by the fine staff and volunteers at Hospice of NW Ohio on Detroit Ave. In lieu of flowers, tributes are welcomed to Hospice of NW Ohio. Guests will be received 2 p.m. until time of service at 7 p.m. Feb. 5 at Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd., Toledo, Ohio. Burial will be private at Highland Memory Gardens. Midland's Jones, 15, takes second in 18U division at USTA National Winter ...

Midwest Closed 18U tournament from Jan. 15-17. After that, Jones hopes to get a berth in her hometown Dow Corning Tennis Classic for the second straight year. That annual women’s professional tournament takes place from Jan. 31 to Feb. 7 at the GMTC. “That’s a goal (for me), to play in (the Dow Corning Tennis Classic),” Jones said. (Midland Daily News)

Artists look 'Through the Trees' at Gallery 48

Palo Alto High School, Bay Area Glass Institute and Public Glass. Bensen attended Pilchuck Glass School in Washington and was a teaching assistant at Corning in New York. His work has been juried into numerous museum exhibitions, such as the San Francisco Airport Museums, Alexandria Museum of Art (Louisiana), Oakland Museum of California and the Oakland Airport. Bensen’s work is also held in many private collections. In the adjacent Community Gallery at 48 Natoma, an exhibit of amazing local bird and nature photography from 18 members of FolPho Photographers will be on display, Jan. 14 through March 3. The Gallery at 48 Natoma is located at 48 Natoma Street in the Folsom Civic Center next to City Hall and is managed by the Folsom Parks and Recreation Department. The gallery showcases art by regional and national professional artists, area museum collections and traveling exhibitions and offers high quality original art exhibits to the community that may otherwise not be experienced in this area. The gallery is free and open to the public and art is available for purchase. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday with additional hours Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m.  Free tours can be arranged by appointment.
