Tha Flower Factory urban farm brings growth—and beauty—to ...

Marsh, a soft-spoken former Cylburn Arboretum horticultural assistant, got the idea for the business while working at Real Food Farm in Clifton Park, a produce farm operated by Civic Works, an urban service nonprofit. He created Tha Flower Factory with the help of a $63,800 grant he won in Baltimore's annual Growing Green Design Competition in 2014, part of the mayor's campaign to transform vacant lots. He has been selling flowers for several months now — Marsh names a cafe, floral design studio and variety of neighbors as clients — and he hired nine teens as workers this summer through Common Ground, a pilot program for youth offered by the nonprofit Community Conferencing Center. Positive effects seem to be taking root, and neighbors have noticed. As he watered his bright yellow sunflowers, purple salvia, pink phlox and red day lilies — not to mention the smattering of cabbage, peppers and tomatoes he grows and shares with neighbors for free — passing motorists honked encouragement and passers-by stopped to chat. Andre Matthews, a frequent visitor to his daughter's home across Gay Street, came over to visit his new friend, who lives a few miles away in Waverly. Matthews called Marsh's creation "a paradise in the jungle." "I remember when this neighborhood wasn't nothing — just abandoned buildings, then after those were torn down, nothing but weeds and bricks and rocks," he said. "Marshall brought it back to life." The farmer laughed and kept at his work. Raising plants, he said, wasn't always in his plans. Marsh has long been familiar with Broadway East — his family attended Trinity African Methodist Episcopal Church nearby when he was a kid — but he grew up in Pikesville, where he helped his mother with her small garden but harbored no horticultural dreams. Brinley Rose Galerie: "A perfect little star" who died after car crash involving pregnant mom

Brittany Austin, and father, Francis Galerie, were involved in a collision that sent them to the hospital while State Police and the Clifton Park & Halfmoon Emergency Corps worked at the crash scene. The baby was delivered by emergency C-section at Albany Medical Center Hospital and weighed 8 pounds 12 ounces, according to a relieved relative who called the great-grandmother. "Everything's fine," Galerie was told. "The baby is perfect. Gorgeous." The injuries to the parents appeared minor, too, and the great-grandmother went to sleep feeling grateful, and blessed. A daughter came to her house to break the news the next morning, June 3, a Friday. "The baby didn't make it," she said. It turned out there had been brain damage to the baby, who clung to life in the neonatal unit of Albany Medical Center Hospital for nearly10 hours after she was born. A crushing loss enveloped the large, extended family and their friends for the past week. "It's been awful. Horrendous," the great-grandmother said Thursday. "It's a sad, sad day. I just hope Frankie and Brittany can get through it." She excused herself to catch a ride to the funeral home. People from across the Capital Region struggled to find the right tone to express their condolences in an online obituary guest book. "My heart aches for your family and the tragic loss of your beautiful daughter," wrote "a mom" from Melrose. "Brinley's beautiful soul is with God ... Know that time does make grief easier yet it will never erase what she means to you," said "a mom who knows." "So so sorry for the loss of your beautiful baby girl. Fly high little one!" wrote "a mom." "May God comfort and bless your hearts and just know that you have a munchkin as a guardian angel!!!" wrote Charlene Knight of Albany. "My heart broke when I read this. May God bless you and your family in your time of sorrow," said "a mom" from Schenectady. "No words," wrote "a mom, aunt and grandma" from Saratoga. The family's obituary listed survivors that included two great-grandmothers, three grandparents, six aunts and uncles, and four cousins. The family thanked Albany Med's medical and pastoral staff "for the care, concern and compassion shown to all her family." They asked for donations to be made to Albany Med's neonatal unit in lieu of flowers.
