Oct 10, 2019Flowers Become an Unlikely Means to Discuss Identity and Politics - Hyperallergic
I thought, “How can you improve upon this?” I was entering Wave Hill, a 26-acre public garden and cultural center in the Bronx, to see Figuring the Floral, a group show featuring artists who make portraits, abstract paintings, and sculptures out of flowers, or incorporate flowers into their portraits. Why add flowers, I wondered, to an already bucolic manmade garden? The limitations of my thinking were obvious from the moment I saw the outdoor installation “El Dorado – The New Forty-Niners” (2019) by Cecile Chong, down a hill from the main exhibit in the Glyndor Gallery. Finding Chong’s installation — comprised of dozens of individual sculptures, surrounded by Wave Hill’s existing stone garden — was like stumbling across an altar in the woods, or even witnessing a private ritual only for the sculptures. Chong has painted her fiberglass and resin sculptures orange, pink, yellow, and purple, and arranged them in four circles. Each sculpture resembles both a blooming rose and and an open mouth, lining up for communion. They are reminders that flowers help us visualize and understand birth, death, and the cycles of life.Cecile Chong, “EL DORADO – The New Forty Niners” (2019), plastic, plaster, encaustic, fiberglass-reinforced resin, 16 ft. diameter (courtesy of the artist, photo by Stefan Hagen)The indoor portion of the piece, which includ...

Aug 17, 2018Flowers sent from afar, memories of past slain officers and a sea of uniforms at Jobbers-Miller funeral
He does it for every officer killed in the line of duty."
Steinbrenner was the long-time owner of the Bronx Bombers who made it standard to take care of law enforcement families. After his death in Tampa in 2010 the organization continued the practice.
As pre-funeral activity got underway at Germain Arena a sea of blue, green, gray, brown and black law enforcement uniforms filled the main hall, punctuated here and there by military personnel. There were numerous hugs, shoulder claps, handshakes and words of comfort.

They moved en masse outside to stand at attention as the body of Jobbers-Miller arrived at the arena.
Retired Fort Myers Police Department public information officer Jim Mulligan was among the police attending.
Mulligan, who retired in 2017 after 30 years, said the funeral brought back memories of Officer Andrew Widman, who was killed in 2008.
‘We saw it bring the community together then," he said. "People wanted to do something. Some of them brought food to the station."
Mulligan said he saw people lining the streets Monday the same way they did during Widman's funeral procession 10 years ago.

Jul 6, 2018New York Today: Where the Corpse Flowers Bloom
Thursday.Yesterday, we stopped and smelled a corpse flower. An Amorphophallus titanum is currently blooming at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx, so we joined the crowd of New Yorkers lining up to sniff the crimson plant.Rancid and sour is how we'd describe it - dead fish also came to mind. After about five minutes of breathing the same air as the plant, we needed a break. Our stomach started to turn.(The corpse flower began blooming Tuesday evening, and the smell lasts about 24 to 36 hours. If you want to get a whiff, the botanical garden advises that you go as soon as possible - so this morning.)A blooming corpse flower in North America is a rare sight. It can take a decade or more for the temperamental flower, accustomed to the hot and steamy jungles of Sumatra, to bloom.p class="css-1i0edl...
