Historic Daytona Beach flower shop suffers extensive damage after electrical fire - WKMG News 6 & ClickOrlando

Firefighters told the owners that the fire started on the second floor. They haven’t been using it for some time because it was undergoing renovations. Now the family-owned business will have to start over, coming out of pocket for expenses because they don’t have fire insurance.“This place is our whole life. We grew up here in the store and it’s just gut-wrenching. We are survivors and we are strong,” Mihalko said. The damage is extensive. The second floor completely charred, merchandise ruined and a hole through the ceiling just patched up. But the ladies at Zahn’s Flowers said they will remain open and accepting orders.“We were able to get fresh product in. Christmas is a big one, especially this time of year you can’t go see your family members, so you send flowers and we are honored to be a part of the community to do that,” said Mihalko. She says the support from the community has been overwhelming.“The way that everybody showed up to help is just incredible. We had family, friends and perfect strangers showing up to help us clean and mop and drop off food... we are just so appreciative,” said Mihalko. The family created a GoFundMe account to help cover the damages from the fire.

Wildflowers are starting to bloom. Here’s where to see them in the Bay Area and California - San Francisco Chronicle

State Parks Sierra District. He recommended the Buttermilk Bend Trail along the South Yuba River. On the other hand, many renowned destinations for wildflowers have fizzled this spring. Death Valley National Park, a spectacular showpiece two years ago, received only 0.38 inches of rain at Furnace Creek this winter. Field scout Linda Stremel said she saw perhaps six wildflowers in four days on her visit last week to the park. Another landmark site, the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve in the San Joaquin Valley, received only 2 inches of rain this winter, rangers said. The hills are faded brown with no poppies and only a light sprinkling of red filaree. Though Daffodil Hill near Sutter Creek (Amador County) remains on the radar for many, the owners closed it, likely permanently, two years ago after a crush of visitors and illegally parked vehicles blocked access roads for emergency vehicles. Wildflowers are always a wild card, dependent on timing, soil moisture, temperature, wind velocity and direct sun. Those factors form a matrix that can ignite or stifle blooms. “Please add a note to stay on trails and do not trample on or pick the flowers,” advised Passantino at Marin County Parks and Open Space. That said, here are the best prospects in the Bay Area. San Francisco Peninsula and coast San Bruno Mountain State and County Park just south of the San Francisco County line has provided excellent diversity in a year where explosive blooms are less common, said Carla Schoof at San Mateo County Parks. At San Bruno Mountain, more than 15 species were identified last week, she said, including California poppy, lupine, blue dicks, fiddleneck, Douglas iris and Indian paintbrush, but also wallflower, yellow rocket, sun cups and footsteps of spring. Edgewood County Park in Redwood City has also provided a good sprinkling of color, Schoof said. In the past week, rangers identified Henderson’s shooting star, California manroot, California poppy, Fremont’s death camas, Pacific hounds’ tongue, warrior’s plume and tomcat clover. Marin County In northwest Marin, the Douglas iris blooms can be a showstopper, and the best bets are around Limantour Beach at Point Reyes National Seashore and Tomales Bay State Park. “We’re currently enjoying the purple pops of Douglas iris,” State Park Ranger Nick Turner said. At Point Reyes, the Chimney Rock Headland can be legendary — 90 species of wildflowers can provide a coronat...

Indian River Commission OKs Flowers' $3 million request for Sheriff's Office security upgrade - TCPalm

The money originally had been allocated for major renovations to the Sheriff's Office complex, but that's no longer realistic as the COVID-19 pandemic will continue to impacts the county budget, Sheriff Eric Flowers told county commissioners Tuesday.More: Indian River County awarded about $27,000 in federal aid for emergency food, shelter programsHe said he wanted to “change some of the funding that was originally designated for future building plans to go toward safety and security of our complex, and begin that process this year.”Commissioners agreed unanimously to “repurpose” money for safety and security upgrades if a plan is presented to the commission with proposed spending.Commission Chairman Joe Flescher agreed with Flowers, saying the funds had been set aside for a “grand project” of agency renovations that could have topped $60 million, yet “may or may not have happened.”Talk of any project in that amount, in the wake of COVID-19, was “now inappropriate,” he said.Security at the complex, built in 1986, had been a concern for years, Flowers said.“It is my goal to make our campus a single-point entry, and a safe place for our employees to come to work on a daily basis,” he said.More: COVID vaccine appointments at Publix in Martin County booked in two hoursCounty Administrator Jason Brown said the commission would address the reallocation of the money this fall.Commission Vice Chairman Peter O’Bryan said he wanted the guarantee of a spending outline “to ensure transparency” before he agreed to Flowers’ request.O’Bryan said he wanted to “see where those dollars are going to go so the public knows what we’re s...
