Dec 8, 2017Local shop owners take Small Business Saturday to heart
We were swamped for almost three hours back-to-back, one after another,” said Susana Vasquez, owner of Pet Food Gone Wild in Rio Rancho. It’s no secret that sales and savings help generate more business. For Vasquez, Small Business Saturday brings new faces and new customers to her store.“We want to invite the other sides of the community – Albuquerque, Corrales, Bernalillo – (let them know) ‘Hey guys, we're here, get to know us and see what our shop is about,’” she said. With “Shop small business” bags in hand, customers saved money by cramming their pet necessities inside, taking advantage of the 20 percent discount on all those items. But Vasquez said those savings don't end Saturday. Some local businesses have teamed up with the city to extend the sales all week. You can get ten percent off with your Rio Rancho Library Card at participating locations and additional saving with a shopping pass coupon.“If you didn't get a chance to come out here, or they did a lot of Black Friday shopping and they’re strapped for cash now, it's available for them,” said Vasquez. It's not just on pet products, but on flowers, food, books and more.“I think small businesses are the heart of the community,” said Lara ... Sep 28, 2016Flower shop fulfilled a dream; owner Jay Myers passes away at 55
Jay Myers, owner and operator of Flowers & Things in Rio Rancho, died of heart complications at his home Monday. He was 55.
Myers’ passing was announced Wednesday on the flower shop’s Facebook page.
A funeral service for Myers will be held Saturday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m.
Myers leaves behind a wife and two daughters.
Following a recession that claimed four out of five flower shops in Rio Rancho, Myers opened Flowers & Things in August 2010.
According to Flowers & Things assistant manager Sara Ausbun, Myers started the business with money he had set aside for retirement.
“Jay had worked in construction his whole life and his dream was to always open a flower shop,” Ausbun said. “He basically helped build Albuquerque, and then he moved out to Rio Rancho. He wanted to help build this community and so he put his retirement into opening a flower shop.”
Myers was very family-oriented, Ausbun said, and loved his wife and two daughters.
“His children were the light of his life,” she said.

Jun 22, 2016Red, white, blue plants perfect holiday gift
I’d asked about originally! What are they, these green strings of pearls? – N.K., Rio Rancho
A: The strings of green pearls you’re noticing are the seed pods of the cottonwood! Soon, those pearls will explode, throwing out the white cotton seed of the cottonwood to be spread by the barest of breezes. It’ll look like snow in June.
The reason: One tree is male, the “caterpillar” tree, and the “string of green pearls” tree is the female. Simple as that.

Soon, the cotton will start flying and hopefully some of the seed will be able to connect to the earth and grow into marvelous cottonwood trees somewhere in our world.
Think about it, it’s a whole lot of seed with a whole lot of potential. Yes, I understand that the cotton does make some people with allergies miserable for a while, but this, too, will pass.
After all, a community without trees is a miserable place to be, so be amazed at this marvel of nature and be Happy Digging In!
Have a safe and peaceful holiday weekend.
