Dec 8, 2017Local shop owners take Small Business Saturday to heart
For Vasquez, Small Business Saturday brings new faces and new customers to her store.“We want to invite the other sides of the community – Albuquerque, Corrales, Bernalillo – (let them know) ‘Hey guys, we're here, get to know us and see what our shop is about,’” she said. With “Shop small business” bags in hand, customers saved money by cramming their pet necessities inside, taking advantage of the 20 percent discount on all those items. But Vasquez said those savings don't end Saturday. Some local businesses have teamed up with the city to extend the sales all week. You can get ten percent off with your Rio Rancho Library Card at participating locations and additional saving with a shopping pass coupon.“If you didn't get a chance to come out here, or they did a lot of Black Friday shopping and they’re strapped for cash now, it's available for them,” said Vasquez. It's not just on pet products, but on flowers, food, books and more.“I think small businesses are the heart of the community,” said Lara Harrison, owner of Under Charlie’s Covers in Bernalillo. “I just hope that everyone will continue to be aware that we need to have these types of places in our community.”While small shops make up a huge part of the state, customers in Nob Hill say they will continue to shop local.“In Nob Hill we do a good job taking care of each other,” said Jeremy Holder, who works in the area. “I think that's important that we're out there focu... Jul 14, 2017Police catch suspect in flower shop arson
On Tuesday night, Albuquerque firefighters put out the flames at People's Flower Shop in northeast Albuquerque. The fire destroyed a greenhouse and five vehicles used to deliver flowers were destroyed.
"Our company is over 70 years old. I've been here 37 years. I've never had a fire," said Wayne Pollack, president of People's Flower Shops.
The whole thing was caught on surveillance video, but they couldn't look at it until power was restored the next day.
"It was clear that everything was captured on video of him walking by behind the greenhouse, was back there for a good couple hours, and then saw a puff of smoke and him walking out from the greenhouse, and then the thing was fully engulfed," Pollack said.
After canvassing the area, the criminal complaint said, police found a man matching the description of the person in that surveillance video at Bel Air-Miramontes Park, which is two blocks away from the scene of the crime.
The suspect is Travese Spragg. Pollack said he doesn't know Spragg and ha... (KOB 4)
May 25, 2017A mother's legacy blooms in Far NE Heights
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Oh, how she used to roll her eyes when her mother urged her to stop and smell the roses and the other flowers in the family garden.“So many flowers,” Yvonne Beckley chuckles. “In the front yard, back yard, side yard. She even had flowers in the front patch of ground on the other side of the sidewalk. Verbena and iris in the back, roses and peonies on the side. They were everywhere. I used to get tired of her getting me to walk around to see and sniff all of them.”Her mother, Angelina Garcia, had a knack for making things bloom. Children. Friendships. Flowers.Especially flowers.AdvertisementContinue reading“People would come just to look at her flowers, especially those peonies,” Beckley recalls. “She was a master gardener way before the term existed. She just learned by doing.”Angelina GarciaBeckley tells me about those peonies, how in her mother’s loving hands they were transformed from tuberous roots gnarled like an old woman’s fingers into aromatic clouds of pink...
