Shop Local Holiday Gift Guide: Montclair's Got Gifts from Quirky to Elegant - Baristanet

The #ShopLocal tradition is even more important this year for holiday shopping. Montclair’s local businesses really, really want you to know they are here for you. Shops have taken huge steps to balance an easy and effective shopping experience with keeping their employees and customers safe. Online ordering, curbside pickup, personal shopping appointments via FaceTime or in-person, and deliveries are all meant to help alleviate the concerns around COVID-safe purchasing. This year’s holiday shopping guide hopes to encourage touring Montclair’s shopping areas on foot so we can spread our gift-dollars to as many local businesses as possible. Window-shopping, combined with checking out Fresh Air Montclair displays and picking up a bite to eat, makes for a fantastic way to spend a day supporting local businesses while respecting social distancing to keep shop employees and our community healthy. We can’t include every shop, so please put additional finds in comments! Quick-and-Easy and One-Size-Fits-All: The gift certificate! Any restaurant, cafe, gift or clothing st...

Joe and Anne, who cared for her during her difficult illness. Hope and her late husband Frank were married for 56 years. As a Montclair resident for over 60 years, Hope was active in many parts of the town’s life. As a longtime member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception (now St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish), Hope served as president of the Parish Council and taught Christian Formation classes when her children were young. She volunteered weekly at the Salvation Army, where she helped its guests get clothes and soap for showers and cooked regularly for Meals on Wheels.Hope was a writer and photographer, who liked to share her love of travel with her readers. She wrote and developed her own photographs, in a little attic dark room, while raising eight children in Montclair. Her articles appeared in Family Circle, Woman’s Day and Yankee Magazine. Later, she worked as a newsletter editor and publicist for trade organizations, including Hobby International, and the Hemophilia Association of New Jersey. Gardening for life: enjoying lazy summer days - Montclair Local

Grab a book and make a shady area of the yard your open reading room,” writes Jose German. JOSE GERMAN/FOR MONTCLAIR LOCALBy JOSE GERMANFor Montclair LocalJOSE GERMANJose German is an environmental activist, Essex County certified master gardener and Montclair resident. He is the founder of the Northeast Earth Coalition.High summer is here! Gardens are full of color despite the scarcity of rain, and the first monarch butterflies are floating gracefully through town. But this summer feels different. In the summer’s heat, a social uprising and a frightening pandemic are causing us to rethink our actions in search of better ways to deal with these challenging times. With COVID-19 a continuing threat, preserving our lives and the lives of our loved ones is a constant concern, but we are also called upon to care about the most vulnerable. In such stressful times, preserving our mental and physical health must be a top priority.People have always seen their homes as their castles. However, in these times of isolation and social distancing, a home can be a refuge for contact with nature, with gar...

Obituary: Catherine "Kitty" Mulroe - Montclair Local

While her 6 children remembered it as one great adventure, filling them with stories for a lifetime, Kitty was burdened with starting life anew in Montclair with few resources, limited job prospects and a seventh child on the way. Drawing on her strong Catholic faith and her stoic nature, she raised (and more-than-occasionally herded) her seven — and eventually eight — children while husband Peter gutted and rebuilt the home they were living in, while simultaneously holding down a full time job. When later in life she had the opportunity for leisure she enjoyed traveling, whether back home to Ireland or with friends on organized trips. Memorable destinations were Nova Scotia, Germany, Rome, Medugorje, Lourdes and the Holy Land. Known as “Nana” to her many grandchildre, Kitty would often fix them milkshakes, deviled eggs or her famous “Nana bread.” Her back door was always open to her offsprings’ friends, who would come and go as if the house were their own.Fiercely proud of her Irish Catholic faith and heritage, she was a parishioner at Our Lady of the Lake Church in Verona and, prior to that, Immaculate Conception Church in Montclair. She was a member of the Rosary Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters of America.Kitty was predeceased by her husband Peter and her son Robert. She is survived by her children John (Bernadette), Peter (Susan), James (Anna), Michael (Catherine), Patricia Farley (Bob), Joseph (Lisa), Brian (Sheri); daughter-in-law Karen (Bill); grand- and great-grandchildren Michelle, Kyle, Jack, Brent, Ryan, Patrick, Victoria, Vincent, Megan, Conor, Brigid, Fiona, Danny, Katie, Catherine, Robert, Peter Michael, Peter Joseph, Michael, Pierce, Alex, Joseph, Elijah, Adrian and Nicole; sister Sheila; and brothers Jim, Tom and Dermot.Visitation will be this Sunday, Feb. 16, from 1 to 5 p.m., at the Hugh M. Moriarty Funeral Home, 76 Park St., Montclair. A mass of Christian burial follows Monday, Feb. 17, 10:30 a.m., at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 30 North Fullerton Ave., Montclair. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, PO Box 302, Maryknoll, NY, 10545.
