Over the past 18 years of managing The Flower Fields in Carlsbad, General Manager Fred Clarke has seen some disappointing crop years caused by early rains, freezes, droughts, pests and wildfires. But nothing beats the pandemic in terms of its unique double-whammy last March. Just over two weeks into its 2020 season last March, the 55-acre floral attraction was forced to close its gates to visitors. At the same time, all of the orders for the Giant Tecolote Ranunculus flowers that the farm cuts and ships back East to wholesale distributors were canceled. Flower sales did eventually rebound, but to control expenses in the early weeks of the pandemic, Clarke mowed down the majority of the early crop to reduce water costs.But everything’s coming up roses, or ranunculus in this case, for the 2021 season. Obituary: Joseph Walter Fortenberry - Oak Ridge Today

Thaddeus S. Fortenberry, daughter-in-law Leyla Megrelidze, and granddaughter Asta Eeva Elizabeth of Austin, Texas. Joe leaves his sister Mary Ellen Clark and her husband Don Clark, along with nieces Julie Holland and Terri Kerley of Knoxville and Steffanie Benson-Elliott of Altamonte Springs, Florida; nieces Stephanie Hall and Lindsay Morton and families; and nephews Ryan and Christopher Kittrell and families, all of Atlanta, Georgia. Joe was preceded in death by his mother Stella, his father Joseph Hubert, and his younger sister Debra Fortenberry. Joe will be missed, but the family is comforted knowing that he is free from the pain and discomfort he had experienced for years. A celebration of Joe’s life will be held in June 2021 in Knoxville, Tennessee, with the dates to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe’s name to Sacred Heart Home in Hyattsville, Maryland, are welcomed. Sacred Heart is where Joe called home for the last 12 years. Some DFW parks and natural areas that remain open — like Tandy Hills Hills Natural Area in Fort Worth, Clark Gardens Botanical Park in Weatherford, and Cottonwood Park in Irving — are pretty spots for walks among flowers. But parks attract visitors, and visitors attract groups, and groups are a bad thing. What's blooming whereA family drive out to a field or a bike ride down a country road might just be the only real way to view bluebonnets in the age of social distancing. Photo-worthy patches have sprung up along roads in Mansfield, Azle, and areas around Ennis — even if the official trails are closed.
