Flower power: Waltham woman judging orchid event at Mahoneys Garden Center

Nov. 3, and "hopefully I will have some plants in the show if something will come into flower," she joked.Held at Mahoney’s Garden Center in Winchester, the event will feature 10,000 square feet of exotic displays from around the world. The show will also include seminars and other educational opportunities for orchid lovers of all ages and degrees of expertise.Shows like these provide an invaluable educational opportunity, according to Abrams."I think it’s a great society, and I encourage people who want to learn about orchids to join and go to the show," she said. These local shows can also open the door for bigger events and greater involvement in the community, she added, describing one larger show in New York that she attended."That was really great," she said. "That was probably my favorite thing, because vendors would come from all over the world. … You [can] get something sort of new and interesting."However, at heart each show is fundamentally similar to every other, she said."It’s always the same -- beautiful flowers, getting inspired," she said.
