Filoli, Conservatory of Flowers all aglow for the holidays - Marin Independent Journal

Filoli is truly a magical place, especially during the holidays, and we are excited this year to offer even more opportunities to visit,” Kara Newport, Filoli’s chief executive officer, says in a recent press release. “We are extending the season and staying open more, so visitors can enjoy the expanded lighting display.” Photo by Richard SimondsThe Filoli mansion and gardens are festively decorated and offer holiday magic for adults and children. Guests at the gaily decorated estate this year will see some new things — a dinner set of Baccarat crystal, a gingerbread house made in the image of the Filoli garden house and a newly discovered cookbook from the Swedish cook who worked for Filoli’s original owners. The cookbook has been described as a “cook’s cookbook.” There are no instructions, just lists of ingredients for dozens of recipes. Visitors can leaf through a working copy of the cookbook to see the types of dishes that might have been enjoyed by the earliest residents and guests of the house. If you have a chance to go in the evening, you’ll see many strings of lights and lighted objects, as they are turned on in the various rooms of the estate. You might also want to plan a trip around these two special events: • Decadence Nights offers See’s chocolate and wine tastings, music, DIY festive crafts and holiday drink specials on Dec. 12, 19 and 26. Tickets cost $35 for adults and $18 for youth ages 5 to 17. • Santa Saturdays take place in the pretty garden house from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Dec. 7, 14 and 21. Children can sit in on storytime with Mrs. Claus in the reception room, dance and sing to holiday tunes in the ballroom, make a seasonal craft item in the visitors center, visit with festively attired ponies in the front courtyard and receive a See’s lollipop. Santa Saturdays are included in the holiday admission ticket. • Details: Holidays at Filoli are at 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily or 4 to 8 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays through Dec. 30 at the Filoli Historic House and Garden at 86 Cañada Road in Woodside. A daytime ticket is $12 to $25. An evening ticket is $18 to $35. Children under 5 years old are free. Flowers looking tired? How to extend their vase life - New Haven Register

Lisa Mason Ziegler, a cut flower grower and operator of The Gardener's Workshop, an online flower farming school near Newport News, Virginia. "Dahlias and sweet peas are more like five days. They have a shorter life but look fabulous." When selecting cut flowers, keep in mind that iris, tulips, snapdragons and daffodils have an extremely short vase life — less than a week. Orchids, carnations and chrysanthemums usually last two weeks or more. A clean vase is important, Ziegler said. "Put it in a dishwasher to remove any bacteria. Then cut 1 to 2 inches off each stem before putting them into the vase. They're probably clogged but cutting will open them up and they'll be able to feed again," she says. Conditioning needs vary, said John Dole, an associate dean and floriculture specialist at North Carolina State University. Some varieties require more managing than others, but all cut flowers should be fed. "Use the flower food packets that most likely came with the bouquet," Dole said. "Mix according to directions and position the flowers into the vase. After they've had their first big drink, take them out, put in fresh water and cut the stems again. "By doing that your flowers will last longer and the sugars in the flower food will enhance their colors — particularly the purples," he said.
