Historically Speaking: Florists a big part of Dover -

The business was then sold in 1893 to Charles Luke Howe. Howe had moved to Dover from Nashua several years previously where he had been involved in several floral enterprises. Upon arrival he opened the Sunnyside Conservatories on Rutland Street "a 4-minute walk from the Sawyer Depot."He abandoned this business in favor of the Garrison Hill location which, by 1905, he had turned into the largest greenhouse operation in the state, with 14 glass structures and several acres of outside plantings (he had bought additional land from Joe Ham). The size of the operation was such that he was able to open and supply retail outlets in Portland and Augusta, Portsmouth and Laconia. He put down more roots by marrying a local woman, Ellen "Nellie" Vittum, and he built a sizable home adjacent to the greenhouse complex. In addition to growing flowers he was an active member of the Masons, Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, and a relatively exclusive organization, the Society of the Colonial Wars (perhaps the male equivalent of the Daughters of the American Revolution?).In 1921, Howe sold the business to Elwill Shortridge, a prominent Dover entrepreneur, owner of the C.E. Brewster Co., wholesale druggists, which was located in a building at the corner of Chestnut and Fourth streets, now the site of St. Mary's Parish Hall. At one time Shortridge also served as president of Merchants National Bank and president of the Dover Realty Co. He and his wife, who had been Ada Massingham, lived at 4 West Concord St., and he remained active in the business until his death in 1946. Ada then took ove...

New Hampshire florists see demand bloom despite event cancellations - New Hampshire Business Review

Annie Covey is a floral designer at Shirley’s Flowers and Sweets in Nashua. (Photo by Sheryl Rich-Kern)To measure the yearning for human connection, look to trends in the flower industry. When businesses shut down at the beginning of lockdowns, floral shop owners anticipated wilting sales. In March, “If we got one or two orders a day, we felt lucky,” said Jordan Hewson, owner of Designed Gardens Flower Studio in North Conway. But then Mother’s Day hit and many florists found they couldn’t keep up with demand. “It was unbelievable,” Hewson said. “I had to shut down my website because I couldn’t take a single more order.” Up to 75% of businesses polled by The Society of American Florists reported increased sales on Mother’s Day this year, despite the pandemic, according to a press release published May 21. “We’re really encouraged to see that spending increased, despite the many potential obstacles – financial, logistical – that could have driven floral spending on gifts downward,” said Society of American Florists (SAF) CEO Kate Penn. Shirley Wrenn of S...

Nashua To Experience Power Of The Flower - Nashua, NH Patch

NASHUA, NH — Flower power is set to fill Downtown Nashua on Wednesday as Fortin Gage Flowers and Gifts joins dozens of florists nationwide to give away free flower bouquets. The Petal It Forward initiative is aimed at helping people enjoy their day with less stress. Passersby may receive two free flower bouquets each with one intended to be kept, and the other given to a friend, colleague, family member or another stranger. Research from the University of North Florida has shown that flowers reduce stress. This is the fourth year that Fortin Gage has participated in Petal It Forward. "Through the positivity of flowers, we hope to make someone's day brighter, and provide a much needed moment of calm amidst the hectic pace of life," Fortin Gage owner Jody Gage said. Gage said the original idea behind Petal It Forward's "keep one, share one" concept, which started in 2015, came after looking at statistics that showed while 80 percent of people reported receiving flowers makes them happy,...

Gardening: Flower shows offer spring in deep winter

The first — and smallest — of the shows is the New Hampshire Orchid Society Show, on Feb. 9 to 11, at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel in Nashua, New Hampshire. This is a specialty show, but has been happening for 27 years and is a delight for both novices and orchid geeks. There will be lectures, displays and vendors. Admission is $10 or less, and kids under 12 are free. Get those grandkids and bring them along.Of the big shows, the first is the Connecticut Flower and Garden Show in Hartford at the Connecticut Convention Center, Feb. 22 to 25. This show used to compete with the Rhode Island Flower Show that was held the same weekend. Sadly, that one ran out of steam and disappeared like some of those Zone 6 perennials I planted in my Zone 4 garden. I used to try to see both shows, but now I don’t have to race from one to the other. The Connecticut Show is a four-day event with plenty of displays and speakers. I always recommend going on Thursday or Friday while the crowds are smaller and the flowers fresher. The theme for this year’s show is “Breath of Spring."The next show is the biggest of the season, the Philadelphia Flower Show at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in downtown Philly from March 3 to 11 — a full nine days of flowers. The theme this year is “The Wonder of Water.” When you enter you will pass through a rainforest environment with a 25-foot waterfall and a jungle of tropical flowers. Other exhibits will focus on other environments, from jungle to desert.I called the show offices and learned that the show covers 10 acr... (The Providence Journal)
