Istanbul springs to life with tulip festival

In the early hours of yesterday, workers planted thousands of tulips hauled from the central city of Konya at Taksim Square, the heart of the city. Some 160 species of the flower, which was wildly popular in the city's Ottoman era, are on display at the square where passersby rush to take selfies against the backdrop of the flowers.Apart from the prominent display of tulips all across the city, particularly in groves giving a respite for Istanbulites from the hubbub of daily life, the festival will also focus on events related to the flower. A painting exhibition was launched yesterday at the Emirgan Grove while a tezhip (illumination art) exhibition concentrating on tulips will open at Taksim Cumhuriyet Art Gallery today. The municipality is also organizing a photography contest where the best photo of Istanbul's tulips will be awarded.Tulips have a significant place in Turkish culture and since the 12th century, they have been widely used in Turkish and Islamic arts. The flower, frequently mentioned in the poems of famous mystic Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi - who lived in Konya where Istanbul Tulip Festival's flowers were brought from - was a common theme in Turkish literature. However, its popularity peaked in the 18th century with the newfound interest of the Ottoman elite in the flower that coined the phrase "Tulip Era."Speaking at the launch of Tulip Festival, Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbas said as part of the annu... Week 4 Friday Night Lights football Heroes

Chadwick has been on target with 66% of his passes, good for 814 yards this season.   *Will Wagner-Central City - This guy has done a terrific job filling the shoes of graduated All-State quarterback Mitch Carlson.      Last week in a 40-3 shocker over pre-season #1 Hastings St. Cecilia, Wagner, who played wide receiver in 2015, hit 11 of 17 passes for 148 yards and 3 TDs.  Wagner also rushed the ball 13 times for 124 yards two more scores.   Can you say Player-of-the-Game?        Thus far in 2016, Wagner heads the Class C-2 list in yards passing with 872 yards and 11 TDs.  Not bad for a former WR, huh?       *TJ Davis-Boys Town - How dangerous is this 6-0, 170 pound junior quarterback for the Cowboys?  Davis kept hammering away last Friday until his Boys Town team came away with a wild 50-40 win over Ashland-Greenwood.   Davis was true on 13 of 19 passes for 234 yards and 5 TDs.  He also ran for 45 and 15 yard TDs and made 3 tackles on defense.     For the year, TJ Davis is 52 of 79 passing for 712 yards and 13 TDs with only 2 picks.  That is hitting his targets at a 68% clip boys and girls.      *Bryce Zimmerer-Creighton - Coach Gene Suhr rode this 5-9, 160 pound sophomore last Friday afternoon to the tune of 41 carries.  Zimmerer responded with 227 yards rushing and TD runs of 1 and 8 yards as the Bulldogs shocked the daylights out of West Holt, 56-14.   After being blown out by Neligh-Oakdale 72-44 in the season opener, Creighton has beaten West Boyd 76-0, then the West Holt blowout.  Zimmerer’s 3 game rushing total stands at 384 yards and 5 TDs.   This Creighton bunch looks like a State Championship team to me right now.  Remember, Neligh-Oakdale is not eligible for the Class D-1 playoffs this fall. *Ryan Neumann-Creighton - Neumann is the man that directs this potent Creighton attack and the key to a title run.  In that manhandling of West Holt, the 6-0, 180 pound senior hit on 12 of 15 passes for 186 yards and 4 touchdowns, all in the 1st half.  Tyler Stubben caught 2 of Neumann’s scoring tosses (42, 9 yards) while Tyler Lilly snared the remaining two TD receptions covering 10 and 8 yards.   This Neumann dude is athletic, mobile and very intelligent.   ***1000 Yard Passing Alert*** *AJ Hubner-Creighton Prep - Completed 20 of... Wounded fighters, civilians evacuated from Syria

Syria. Earlier this month, scores of fighters and their families began leaving a rebel-held neighborhood in the central city of Homs after several years of combat. But the agreement has raised concerns about forced demographic change in Syria, a Sunni-majority country with Christian and other minorities, whose nearly five-year conflict has claimed over 250,000 lives and generated more than 4 million refugees. Assad's family and other top officials hail from the Alawite minority, an offshoot of Shiite Islam, and the government is allied with Shiite-majority Iran and the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah. The Sunni-led opposition has accused Assad and his allies of trying to clear Sunnis out of government-held areas. The fighters and family members who were evacuated from the predominantly Sunni town of Zabadani are Sunni Muslims, and Syrian state TV said the group included many wounded fighters. The evacuees from the northern villages of Foua and Kfarya are Shiites. In a statement, the U.N. in Syria said more than 450 people had been evacuated in total, including 338 people from the two Shiite villages and 125 people from the Zabadani area. "Today's humanitarian action shows that even in the middle of fierce conflicts, agreements can be reached, solely for the purpose of alleviating human suffering," said Marianne Gasser, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross Delegation in Syria, which helped facilitate the evacuation. But as the evacuations were taking place, twin bombings struck a government-held neighborhood in Homs, killing at least 19 people and wounding more than a hundred, according to state TV. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on local Syrian activists, said the blasts killed 32 and wounded 90. It was not immediately possible to reconcile the differing casualty figures. Homs Governor Talal Barrazi said a car bomb exploded, and that minutes later a suicide bomber detonated his explosives belt among people gathered at the scene. Footage aired on state TV showed widespread destruction in the area as firefighters tried to extinguish the blaze. Dead bodies could be seen in the street. Barrazi said the bombings came in response to the reconciliation deal. In the northern city of Alepp... (Pueblo Chieftain)
