Local woman creates coloring book for adults

Beverly Putnam, who lives between Kings Mountain and Shelby, said it’s inspiring. That’s why she chose to create “Sketchels,” a coloring book for adults that’s being made and sold locally. The illustrations are original, based on her personal photograph albums. While traveling, she enjoys photographing animals, flowers, buildings – anything interesting. And her travels range from trips across oceans and walks through her backyard. The coloring book is now for sale, just in time for Christmas. Her lifelong interest in art therapy guided her decision to create the coloring book. She said it reminds her of coloring pages she enjoyed as a child. “That was my outlet but I made my own coloring books and my favorite thing to do was make paper dolls,” she said. “Because of that, my favorite Christmas present was always the big 96 box of crayons.” She still remembers how the crayons smelled. It’s nostalgic for her. And she says these days, coloring is a relaxing activity that’s soothing and can be enjoyed by all ages. Sketches and doodles The name of the coloring book co... Charleston shooting suspect caught after florist spots black Hyundai at stoplight

KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. — Debbie Dills thought the black Hyundai next to her at a stoplight looked familiar — it had a South Carolina tag and a white decal on the front. Her heart raced when she saw the driver, the bowlcut-wearing white man who authorities say killed nine people in a black church in Charleston. Police say her quick thinking helped bring 21-year-old Dylann Roof into custody after an intense, nearly daylong manhunt. (Minneapolis Star Tribune)

How a florist shop worker helped track down an accused mass killer

Thursday started out like any other for Debbie Dills, except she was a “little late” coming into work at Frady’s Florist in Kings Mountain. However, that “little late” led to a heroic effort. Dills, of Gastonia, an employee at Kings Mountain’s Frady’s Florist, and her boss, Todd Frady, made the initial calls around 10:35 a.m. that led to the arrest of Dylann Roof, who is suspected of killing nine people, including pastor and S.C. state Sen. Clementa Pinckney, during a prayer meeting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston on Wednesday night. Dills, driving from her home in south Gastonia into work, first spotted Roof on Highway 74 near Sparrow Springs Road in Gastonia, then shortly after, called Frady to ask his advice. Frady said, he then made a call to officer Shane Davis of the Kings Mountain Police Department, who relayed to Shelby Police that the suspect’s black Hyundai was traveling west on Highway 74. “I saw the news coverage last night and the picture of the car. I knew it was a black car, and it had a tag on the front. I saw the pictures of him with the bowl cut,” Dills said... (Hilton Head Island Packet)

Florist spots Hyundai at light, helps catch South Carolina church shooting suspect

KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. - A North Carolina florist is being hailed for her help catching the man accused of shooting and killing nine people inside a black church in Charleston. Debbie Dills had been on her way to work Thursday morning when she saw a familiar black Hyundai next to her at a stoplight. She says her heart raced when she saw the driver: A white man with a bowlcut, just like the photos of the suspect she had seen on the news. The apprehension of 21-year-old Dylann Roof ended an intense, hours-long manhunt. Dills says she called her boss, Todd Frady, who called a police officer he knew. That officer contacted the Shelby Police Department, whose officers captured Roof. Dills says she caught up with the suspect and got a license plate number, following the car for about 2 miles while police confirmed it was the right car. (The Denver Channel)
