Hints From Heloise: Dust in the flowers

I want to clean them rather than replace them. They were expensive, and the colors perfectly match my home, so how do I clean them?Meg H., Gastonia, N.C.Meg H.: Pour 2 cups of regular table salt into a clear plastic bag. Take the flowers, one at a time, and place the flower head in the bag of salt and shake it vigorously. This will remove the dust. Repeat this process for each flower. The leaves can be wiped down with a damp cloth.Dear Heloise: Years ago, my grandmother would go out into the garden with a pin after we’d gone to bed, and on a small watermelon or squash or young cucumber, she would scratch our names. As the vegetable grew, our names became more visible. She told us the garden elves had selected that particular vegetable just for us, so naturally we ate it! Great way to get kids to eat their veggies!Agnes D., Ontario, CanadaAgnes D.: You’re right! That is a clever way to get kids to eat their veggies!Dear Readers:? The fork originally had only two tines and was referred to as a “split spoon.”? A shoemaker often is referred to as a cobbler, but actually a cobbler is a shoe repairman. An actual shoemaker is a cordwainer.? How many emails are sent daily? About 160 million, of which 97 percent are b...

Tips for getting it right when it comes to Valentine's Day flowers

Don’t go there. To get you ready, we headed over to Climbing the Walls Flower Shop in Gastonia where owner and floral wizard Randy Ouzts had some advice: Go big or go home. What’s he talking about? Going cheap isn’t going to work for this holiday. Sure you can grab a bargain bin dozen roses from that discount grocery store, but they’ll probably be about as beat up and battered as you’ll be when you present them to your sweetie. A better game plan: Visit a florist. “When you move to a town, the best thing a man can do is to find a good doctor and a florist,” said Ouzts, who offered some advice sure to make love bloom. FOUR THINGS TO CONSIDER 1. Be open minded. We all think our love is special and yet we all reach for that dozen of long stem roses. Let your florist make a few suggestions and you could walk out with a unique arrangement for the love or your life. “Let the florist do his job,” Ouzts advises. 2. Arrangements are big right now. Face it, showing up with that dozen roses under your arms is like something straight out of a TV show from the 1950s. Your girl’s not Donna Reed after all. Ouzts demon-strated how cutting the long stems off the roses a... (Gaston Gazette)

UAW receives notice of 936 layoffs at Freightliner plant

They are bracing for a big loss. Union leaders said this will be the only plant in the area to see layoffs. The Gastonia plant and the Mt. Holly plant hired 600 workers last year. David Giroux, director of corporate communication and public relations for Daimler Trucks North America, released the following statement: "Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) provided Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (“WARN”) to plant employees and Bargaining Unit representatives regarding a planned reduction in force of approximately 936 workers at the Cleveland Truck Manufacturing Plant. This workforce adjustment will be effective on March 5, 2016; however, the impacted employees’ last day of work will be Friday, January 8, 2016. Employees will receive payment in lieu of the notice period at each employee’s regular rate of pay, and employees are free to seek and accept other employment during the notice period without jeopardizing their entitlement to the WARN period payment or benefits. DTNA’s WARN Act notification is due to a sustained reduction in orders and a diminished build rate and is considered temporary. "The Cleveland Truck Manufacturing Plant is located in Cleveland, North Carolina and manufactures heavy-duty Freightliner and Western Star trucks. The facility presently employs approximately 3,100 workers, which will be reduced to approximately 2,200 after the temporary adjustment. DTNA is reducing output by one-third at the Cleveland Facility in anticipation of a softer North American truck market in 2016, which will be somewhat below the very strong market of 2015. "DTNA has no further comment on the layoffs."   Read more top trending stories on ... (WSOC Charlotte)
