Gardening: Four winning flowers from All-America Selections - Saskatoon StarPhoenix
These four may be in short supply in 2020, but look for them in seed catalogues and at garden centres this spring anyway.

Another year, another crop of winners.All-America Selections (AAS, http://www.all-americaselections.org), an independent non-profit organization, has been evaluating new introductions in test sites across North America since 1932, and many of the winning selections have stood the test of time.My mother-in-law grew ‘Straight-8’ cucumbers, a winner from 1935, and always shared her delicious and bountiful yield from her backyard. In my garden, two past winners have been outstanding: ‘Foxy’ foxglove (1967 winner, dwarf annual, a mixture of creamy white, mauve and pink flowers) and ‘Tropical Rose’ canna (1992 winner, dwarf tender perennial, fl... Gardening in January? Here are some tips for shopping seed catalogs - Grand Forks Herald
Browsing seed catalogs isn’t just about wishing spring were here. What better time to plan this year’s flower and vegetable gardens? When spring arrives and we get busy outside, we’ll be ready. Americans have loved their winter seed catalogs since Philadelphia’s Landseth Seed Company published the first edition in 1784. Through history, seed catalogs were sometimes the only link rural areas had with the outside gardening world. Receiving a colorful catalog filled with flower and vegetable varieties creates a light at the end of the winter tunnel. Do mail-order seed companies take business away from local garden centers? Not really. Seed catalogs and the inspiration they provide tend to increase total market demand for gardening products. Local garden centers can’t possibly stock the tens of thousands of seed and plant varieties available, so mail-order companies and locally owned garden centers coexist quite well.
Many of us buy most of our spring plants locally, but also enjoy shopping ... Feb 1, 2020
Coming Up Roses: Pretty purple rose boasts heavenly fragrance - Los Altos Town Crier
All-America Rose Selections. The AARS, regarded as the most prestigious rose prize in the U.S., has been replaced by the new American Garden Rose Selections program.
Ebb Tide rose flowers are double, old-fashioned, 3.5 inches and have 35 petals. The shrub grows compactly, but it can reach 4-feet-by-4-feet. The growth habit is upright with medium-size, dark-green, semi-glossy foliage. It blooms in flushes from April until December in the Bay Area. Not to mention the plant has excellent pest and disease resistance.
In addition to its unique and striking dark-purple color, the Ebb Tide’s intense heavenly fragrance is a major selling point. Its scent is a very strong combination of clove and citrus blossoms. The classic rose smell is rich and elegant. Its smoked, deep plum-purple color and strong fragrance are rare to find in average bouquets.
Ebb Tide has a complicated parentage that includes three mauve roses: Big Purple (Stephens 1986), Blue Nile (Delbard 1980) and Sweet Chariot (Moore 1985).
Ebb Tide flowers change in response to temperature and light. In the early spring and late fall, when the temperature is cooler, the flower is a deep, smoky purple. In the hot summer, it transforms into a violet-red. In the same blooming, however, you can somehow still find the beautiful deep purple hidden in the shade, whereas others bloom in a mauve color.
I planted an Ebb Tide rose in a partly shaded area of my garden, and it looks happy there. The rose makes an attractive statement in the garden or in cut flower arrangements.
The flowers open very quickly when the temperature is hot. Cut flowers earlier to make your bouquets, right when the buds start to open. You can mix the Ebb Tide with other colorful flowers to make an ey... Feb 1, 2020

Winning poster design for 2020 Common Ground Country Fair highlights native flowers, pollinators - Bangor Daily News
Collecting posters, prints and T-shirts from the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association’s annual Common Ground Country Fair is a tradition almost as cherished as the fair itself. Every year, fairgoers clamor at the merchandise tent for keepsakes featuring that year’s fun, farm-related design, which is chosen every year through a contest juried by members of the fair steering committee and the MOFGA board of directors.
This year’s design will highlight a pollinator and a native flower.
On Tuesday at the Maine Agricultural Trades Show in Augusta, MOFGA revealed the winner of its annual Common Ground Country Fair poster contest. The winning design by Portland-based artist Joy Grannis features blooming stalks of scarlet and magenta Monarda flowers, commonly known as bee balm, surrounded by three hovering yellow bees.

The 44th annual Common Ground Country Fair's winning poster design.
“The whole image really pops,” said April Boucher, director of the Common Ground Country Fair. “When we unveiled it at the [Maine Agricultural] Trades Show, people would stand in front of the image and take it all in. It’s a very stop-the-traffic kind of design.”
Grannis said that finding out her design had been chosen was “thrilling.”
“I wanted this for a long time,” she said. “I grew up knowing about the fair and going to the fair. Winning felt so gratifying. I fe... Feb 1, 2020

U.S. If you want to see one in person, you're going to have to pack a bag and hop on a plane. The U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington, D.C. has displayed their fair share of stinky flowers, including Amorphophallus titanum (aka the other corpse flower) in 2017, which was the first time the species was displayed in North America.
