Cephalanthus occidentalis). The catalpa will be a large specimen tree on a section of lawn that I always left for badminton. Given how little I play, I gave the lawn over to a magnificent flowering tree. It is 10 feet tall, and will get to be 40 or so, blooming in late June and into July. It’s fragrant, too.Buttonbush, a native plant, likes moist soil and sun to part shade. I have plenty of moist soil, so planted one near my brook. It produces neat, round white blossoms in early summer.I wish you all a great gardening year for 2018. Jun 22, 2016After 46 years, Rancho Cucamonga teacher says goodbye with flowers, tears
PE and health at the high school level. On the side, Tolan coached tennis, soccer, gymnastics, badminton and basketball.
She made the move south in 1989 and has taught science, PE and designed an elective called “Kickstart” — a hybrid class that teaches manners, how to set a table, etiquette, CPR, bullying and peer pressure, cursive writing, among other topics. For good measure, she also coached cross country, volleyball, basketball, soccer and track.
A highlight was getting the kids to participate in First Lady Michelle Obama’s worldwide challenge to set a record for jumping jacks, Tolan said. The effort put Alta Loma Junior High in the book of “Guinness World Records.”
“‘Mrs. Tolan, I lost 100?pounds because you believed in me and were willing to help me,’” she said one student wrote her.
A former student, Jen Rosenstein — now a professional photographer — took the above photo.
“She showed up at school the last week of school with flowers to say thank you and happy retirement. I had not seen her in years,” Tolan said. The two shared “a lot of tears between the two of us as she told me how much I meant to her during her junior high very difficult years. We sat in my locker room and talked for some time.”
To her former students and colleagues, she wants them to know how hard it is to leave, but “I will never say goodbye but rather, see you soon on Facebook!’
