Elgin readies for Memorial Day ceremonies

Corps League is planned for 9:45 a.m.The program will pay special tribute to veterans interred at sea, and keynote speaker will be Col. Sheldon J. Bathurst, a retired U.S. Marine who served in Vietnam. The program is set to feature the Elgin Master Chorale and will conclude with the strewing of flowers into the Fox River, a rifle salute and the playing of Taps. Should city officials deem weather conditions unsuitable for outdoor programs, an announcement will be made no later than 8:30 a.m. on Memorial Day that the Veterans Memorial Park and Bluff City Cemetery programs will be held at their normal times at the Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way, Elgin. Such information would be posted on the city of Elgin's website and other media outlets, Center (Chicago Tribune)

Photo: CHRIS SEABROOK 082916cturf90 Bathurst Regional Council will host a memorial service for Peter Brock on Thursday at 10am to mark 10 years since the racing driver’s death and to commemorate his life. Brock, as readers are no doubt aware, racked up a record nine wins in the Bathurst 1000. The service will be held at the Brock statue outside the National Motor Racing Museum. So where do the native flowers come in?  Bathurst motorsport fan Matt Irvine says fans attending the service should bring native flowers because the famous driver was a big fan of them. Matt, Parade is told, has been attending the Brock memorials over the past 10 years, including in 2007, when hundreds of people turned up at the top of Mount Panorama for the first Brock memorial.  The MC at the Brock service up at the Mount will be Supercars commentator Greg Rust.
