Continuing a tradition that started in 1935, the Greater New Orleans Floral Trail named a queen of its "Festival of Flowers." Founded by Ed Polson, the group originally asked citizens to beautify their front yards to create a "Floral Trail" with the queen and her court chosen to reign over the festivities. The Coronation Ball at the Sheraton Hotel on June 11 was the culmination of a day that started with the queen being introduced in Jackson Square, followed by a carriage procession to the ball. This year's court included maids, Misses Magdalena Sandridge Greer, Allison Mary Hedrick, and Callie Renee McDaniel; demoiselles Sophia Dianne Cruze, Faith Elizabeth Hammons, Emily Bernard Hedrick, Lilian Lee Hernandez, Katie Marie Johnston, Shelby Marie LaSalle, Le'Vanna Maria Rossignol, Meghan Michelle Rousset and Isabella Grace St. Philip; princesses Misses Khale Brenna Acosta, Sophia Margaret Dusang, Ainsley Claire Liles, Chloe Caroline Robertson, Mercedees Mary Hernandez, Maya Gabrielle Rahman, Avery Caitlin Liles, Lily Elizabeth Robertson and Kaelynn Marie Steltz, and flower girls Ava Anne DiBenedetto, Audrey Grace Isham, Sofi... Cunningham said in an emotional speech during the annual Vernon Homeless Memorial service at Polson Park on Thursday.
Cunningham, who lost a relative to a drug overdose this past year, said the province had to do more to help the dispossessed.
She also condemned welfare rates as not enough for people to live on.
“This is not acceptable that people are having to sleep in parks.”
The city councillor took part in a homeless count throughout the city on Wednesday where 33 people were found sleeping rough.
“This should be an election issue, we need to eradicate homelessness.”
Memorial organizer Chuck Harper said at least 15 homeless people had already died in Vernon this year but it could be as high as 20 or even 25.
“Men and women (are) dying here in our city from numerous effects: drug overdoses, health problems, suicide, accident.”
Harper said those deaths were hidden from view and lauded those pushing for a national housing strategy.
“Homelessness is more and more and more of an issue,” said Harper, adding that the deaths of those on the street “should never go unnoticed.”
A few dozen people laid flowers at the foot of a stone memorial in the park, dedicated to “the lives lost to homelessness.”
