In The Garden | Tiger swallowtail butterflies abundant this summer - Mansfield News Journal

Arkansas, Michigan and Mississippi. • Northwest Ohio was hit hardest for wet fields, namely Fulton and Williams counties. • In Ohio, a total of more than 1.5 million acres that normally would be planted were unplanted this year — a total of 881,000 acres of corn and 599,000 of soybeans. Our hope is we don't get a couple more back-to-back seasons like 2019 We realize there could be more wet seasons ahead, but hope that doesn't happen. Farmers nationwide appreciate all of the support during this tough year. Brain food • The most beautiful flowers grow in rocky soils and crevices. • Humans have one mouth and two ears; there is a message there. Flowers in the sky: These crops grow on a Berkeley rooftop - Berkeleyside

A few months ago, Letz’s business, Bluma Flower Farm, took over the rooftop plots in the Garden Village building on Dwight and Fulton that used to be home to Top Leaf Farms. At this time of year not much is in bloom, but there are snapdragons growing in one corner and lavender in another. In the ground are future dahlias, cosmos, lisianthus and zinnias. For the past four years, Letz has been commuting to Sunol, which is where she first started the farm. And, despite having expanded to Berkeley, she is not yet ready to give up the lease on the land in Sunol, because farming in a city, on top of a roof, not to mention in a completely different climate, is a huge experiment. “It’s definitely a huge learning curve,” she said. “I know a lot but I don’t know how my crops will grow on this rooftop, as I haven’t done it before, and I don’t know anyone else doing it. This is definitely the biggest leap I’ve taken with my business so far.” Bluma flower farm on the rooftop of the apartments at Dwight Way. Photo: Melati Citrawireja While the locavore movement continues to gain strides where food is concerned, the same consideration is not typically given to flowers. Most commodity flowers are imported from abroad, and given that flowers are expected to be beautiful and pristine, they are often treated heavily with pesticides. Letz’s farm is certified organic. If couples care about serving locally grown food at their wedding reception, she hopes they will also consider where their flowers are grown. The decision t...

In crowded food truck scene, Minneapolis' first mobile flower shop creates its own lane

Minneapolis Spyhouse; in the evening she's been pulling up to taprooms or distilleries, including Fulton and Tattersall. At midday, she's tried spots in the heart of downtown to capitalize on the lunch crowds. "Oftentimes, people will say, ‘I looked out my office window and saw this striped thing with people gathered around and I just had to go investigate,' " Abt said. "It kind of restores my faith in humanity to see how many people are thinking about other people. The other day, a guy came down and bought a $25 bouquet for a co-worker who was having a really bad day." ...

Time to tiptoe through tulips in Lewes

Mayor Ted Becker, is working on all aspects of the multifaceted event. This year's celebration is receiving financial sponsorship by chamber member Fulton Bank for the fifth consecutive year. The timing of the tulips' appearance is an inexact science and to that end the committee has expanded the time frame of the event to enhance the chances that the tulips will be visible during the event. The event dates (April 6-15) span two weekends with special events planned on the first weekend - April 6, 7 and 8. On April 8, Lewes in Bloom will be staging a sale in Zwaanendael Park from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with potted tulips among other plant-related items for sale in advance of the Easter holiday weekend the next week. Also in Zwaanendael Park on April 8, Ken Norman, owner of Floral Inspirations, will be demonstrating how to arrange tulips with simple, creative tips. The GFWC Zwaanendael Women's Club will also be in the park April 8 taking orders for 6-inch geranium pots for pick up May 5, the sale of which benefits their donations to the many locally based organizations they support. Flowers by Mayumi, located at 128 Second St., invites everyone to stop by the shop and watch informally as their designers create beautiful floral arrangements Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8 during shop hours - 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.The tulip planting locations, as well as Lewes' historic landmarks, will be included on the Tiptoe To The Tulips Map and the Tiptoe To The Tulips Shuttle Tours coordinated with the Cape May-Lewes Ferry with docents from the Lewes Historical Society.
