Recognizing a need in his community, Father Michael J. McGivney, the 29-year-old assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Conn., gathered a group of men at his parish on Oct. 2, 1881. He proposed establishing a lay organization to prevent Catholic men from entering secret societies antithetical to Church teaching, uniting Catholic men and helping families of deceased members,” according to the Knights’ website, www.kofc.org.
“To demonstrate their loyalty to their country as well as their faith, these men took Christopher Columbus — recognized as a Catholic and celebrated as the discoverer of America – as their patron. The Knights of Columbus elected officers in February 1882 and assumed corporate status on March 29.”

Aug 10, 2017ICE Orders The Deportation Of Another Norwalk Mother Who Owns Flower Shop
Guatemala after 24 years in the U.S. Chavarria was granted a stay in her deportation after she took sanctuary in a New Haven church.
Chavarria also had no criminal record, worked as a housekeeper and had been meeting regularly with immigration officials. She can now work out her problems with her immigration status.
In another local case, New Fairfield resident Joel Colindres was given just 28 days notice of his order to be deported Aug. 17.
Colindrés, 33, was born in Guatemala and came to the U.S. without documentation in 2004. He married his wife, Samantha, a U.S. citizen, in 2010. They have two U.S.-borne children.
A trio of federal lawmakers from Connecticut have asked the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to reconsider his deportation order.

Feb 9, 2017Where to find deals on Valentine's Day gifts
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — There’s less than a week until Valentine’s day and if you’re looking for gift ideas that won’t break the bank we’ve got your back. We are stretching your dollar with some different, inexpensive ideas. I talked to a Retail Me Not shopping and trends expert who says there are lots of discounts you can find right on your smart phone.
The flowers, candy and dinners out: it’s no secret the day of love is better for the relationship than it is for the wallet. But saying I love you shouldn’t have to break the bank.
We talked to Retail Me Not’s shopping and trends expert Sara Skirboll who suggests you check your smart phone for savings.
“Macy’s also has 20% off of their Valentine’s Day items, Kay Jewelers has a deal that gets you $75 off if you spend $299 on jewelry which in the grand scheme of things actually is a pretty good chunk of change to save money,” Skirboll said.
A list of deals like that are compiled on sites like Retail Me Not and Groupon.

Dec 28, 2016A girl rediscovers color in Adrien Broom's images at Lyman Allyn
Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, Italy. Broom, whose commercial work includes portrait and fashion photography, now divides her time between Brooklyn and New Haven. It was in her New Haven studio that she shot all the images for "A Colorful Dream."
The idea for the project developed after Broom visited a friend who was about to have her first baby. The nursery was awash in white — a white cradle, a white rocking chair, white painters' cloth as they painted the room. Broom thought it was beautiful and began contemplating creating a world that was all white. That developed into the notion of a child coming into her adolescence and discovering all the different parts of the world, represented by separate colors that, all together, create a whole.
Broom originally thought of the project as a children's book, and she is currently pitching the idea to publishers.
"When I was younger, my favorite books were the ones where you would have to stare at the illustrations. Every time you'd look, you'd find something else. That was definitely an inspiration for me," she says.
Figuring out what items to include in each set for these photos was a process in itself. Broom brainstormed on her own and then sought input.
"I'd have a drink with a couple of my creative friends. 'Can I buy you guys a drink, and we'll talk about orange for an hour?'" she says with a laugh.
She also went on social media, writing to all the people who follow her work.
"I'd be, like, 'Hey, guys, I'm about to start exploring orange. What makes you think of orange?' Stuff would come in from all over the world, from all these different people that follow me on social media. It was fascinating because there would always be things that (I thought), 'Oh, yeah, I can't believe I didn't think about that,'" she says.
Among the social-media-shared ideas: someone suggested a Purple Heart medal for the purple set, so Broom made a constellation in the sky of a Purple Heart medal.
Once she had the materials in mind that she wanted to use, Broom sketched out what each set was going to look like and then figured out where to find the various items. She rented a lot of the props from Goodspeed Musicals, including the telephone booth, grapes and many of the flowers.
Then she and her assistants Kristen Meyer and Tony Palmieri built a single set and shot the photographs. They usually left that set up for a week or two after they were done because, Broom says, "it was too emotional to tear it down right away." But then they would strike the set and start building the next set in the same spot. All told, including design and construction, it was a three-year project.
The exhibition's wall text notes of the resulting images: "De... (theday.com)
