American within 100 miles of the stadium scoreboard. In professional baseball alone there are the Cleveland Indians, the Atlanta Braves and the Kansas City Chiefs, not to mention the college teams.
What would it take to get to a level of sensitivity where we wouldn’t stand for our school’s Fighting Redskins any more than we would accept a team called the Maine Jews or the Minnesota Swedes. The list of names of flowers and plants provides plenty of possibilities. And as an extra benefit, the level of violence in our society alone may begin to diminish. It’s just plain difficult to muster up hate when the object of that hate is a rhododendron.
Here is a suggestion for professional team owners, coaches, parents and spectators: When looking for a new mascot for your team, think flowers. Or plants (the Fighting Amaryllis) or cuddly animals (the Fighting Teddy Bears).
You like the sound of the Fighting Fiddleheads of Wiscasset? Or the Mt. Ararat Magnolias?
We could still enjoy our team mascots and cheerleaders, whose job it is to distract us so we don’t get bored. Instead of a man or woman stalking around dressed as a bear or an Indian chief, we could watch a small person dressed as a sunflower, armed with a fly swatter and a spray bottle of olive oil. One thing about having animated flowers or plants or cuddly animals is you have to be careful in dressing them safely, since most don’t have any places for arms and legs.
One more advantage to adopting more peaceful attitudes among competitors is that decades-old grudges and feuds are hard to maintain when the object of your rage is the team known as the Fighting Fiddleheads of Lincoln County, or the Brunswick Begonias, or the Newcastle Nastu...

Her more recent installation …called up, which featured a pool stuffed to its brim with plush toys and candles, was staged as a part of Kansas City’s “Open Spaces” biennial this past summer. Seeing this work, I was struck by how joyful it looked; however, only later, I learned that the work was installed inside a hydrotherapy pool built in the 1950s for children with skin diseases. “The pool was barren and needed to be revived,” she recalls, describing the abandoned pool almost like a body brought back to life.

Nov 15, 2018WWI Memorial to light up in projection of poppy flowers to begin Armistice Day commemorations
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A sea of red poppies will light up the north frieze and Liberty Memorial Tower at the National World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City beginning at 7 p.m. today. The illuminative exhibit will last the nine nights before November 11, Armistice Day. 2018 marks the centennial anniversary of the day which ended World War I. Red poppy flowers became a symbol of peace following the war after a Canadian Army surgeon referenced them in a poem he wrote named "In Flanders Field." The bright flowers rose from dark battlegrounds of Europe during the war.DWP Live, a group who has designed Super Bowl halftime show performances, will set up the display named Peace and Remembrance. The lights will consist of nearly 55 million pixels. They will rotate every half hour from poppies to scenes of the war. The lights will be turned on from sunset every night until 1 a.m.CEO and president of the National World War I Museum and Memorial Matt Naylor called the illumination exhib...

Jul 26, 2018Mourners leave flowers for duck boat victims as officials probe for answers
The extended Coleman family likely wouldn't have been on the ill-fated trip but for a ticket mix-up. Tracy Beck, of Kansas City, Missouri, said she recalled the family members waiting in line. After they stopped for a picture, a ticket taker realized they should have boarded at a different location and reassigned them, the Associated Press reports.
While a severe thunderstorm had hit around the time of the boat's capsizing, causing the 5-foot waves on Table Rock Lake, much of what specifically caused the boat to sink – while other vessels withstood the harsh conditions – is unclear. Teams found the boat sitting upright on its wheels in 80-feet of water.
A second duck boat on the lake in southwest Missouri, about 225 miles southwest of St. Louis, made it safely to shore.
The U.S. military in World War II originally used duck boats to transport troops and supplies, and they were later modified for use as sightseeing vehicles.
Officials at the National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the accident, said it could be a year or longer before all the answers are found.
NTSD board member Early Weener said investigators would release a preliminary report within a month that could provide some information about wha...
Jul 26, 2018Visitors offer prayers, flowers after Branson duck boat tragedy
Branson," Holloman said, adding he hopes the families can find peace and comfort.
Gayla and Bob Reeves of Kansas City brought their four granddaughters to Ride The Ducks Friday to lay flowers by the front of the business.
Gayla Reeves said they did not know any of the victims but still felt compelled to show respect to the families.
She said she lost a daughter in a vehicle accident.
"It's so tragic. There is no other word for what the families are going to go through now," she said. "God be with them all. Give them peace and know that their loved ones are in heaven."
She said they thought about riding the Ducks yesterday, but it was too hot.
Instead, they took their granddaughters to an arcade.
A softball team from Alvin, Texas, was staying nearby - in town for the Fastpitch America Softball Association 14U World Series - and considered riding one of the Ducks last night, said a parent of one of the girls on the team.
It was only because of a timing mix-up that some of the players were on the diamond instead of the doomed Duck boat.
"We just happened to be playing a game that was off-schedule," said Emily...
