Visitors offer prayers, flowers after Branson duck boat tragedy

Holloman and Sanders said they have never felt scared on Ride the Ducks and recall being told by operators that they could put on a life jacket if they wanted. "We never felt unsafe on the Ducks. Mourners leave flowers for duck boat victims as officials probe for answers

BRANSON, Mo. - It began with a single flower placed on each car left overnight on the parking lot at Ride the Ducks Branson, the company that owned the amphibious tourist boat that took its final fateful ride on storm-tossed Table Rock Lake. The high winds and 5-foot waves, seemingly emerging from a quiet summer evening, capsized the boat Thursday evening, killing 17 people, ranging in age from 1 to 70 and including nine relatives visiting from Indiana. By late Friday night, the hoods of two remaining cars were overfilled with flowers, with space left only on the tops of the vehicles and on the ground around them for folks to add to the collection. Surrounding a vehicle shared by two of the victims, hundreds gathered to pay their respects and mourn those lost Thursday night. Fourteen people survived. The majority of the those paying their respects during the quiet vigil didn't know the victims, but said Branson, a popular tourist destination, is a family, and coming together is what the town is all about. Leading the candlelit vigil was Zach Klein - a field technician for the Taney County Sewer District - who didn't personally know the people he came there to honor. But when he was given the opportunity to speak, he didn't turn it down. He talked for five minutes to the crowd of people wiping away tears or holding their loved ones close. "Right now, we're in a time to mourn," Klein said. "We don't know when we're going to go meet our heavenly father. Be there for the people who need you when they need you." At Least 26 Dead After Texas Tornadoes and Midwest Flooding | The Weather Channel

Officials in Jasper and Howell counties relayed reports of water rescues to the NWS late Monday morning. In Branson, water levels rose and inundated several buildings along the riverbed. Interstate 44 was closed from mile marker 172 to 176 Monday afternoon due to flooding, the Missouri Department of Transportation said. Ten people were killed by severe flooding in parts of Missouri over the weekend. Two of those fatalities were confirmed in Greene County on Saturday, according to emergency management. They also reported at least 103 water rescues and 198 traffic control issues.  The two Greene County victims have been identified as Steven Welton, 42, and Edward Kammerer, 60. Welton drowned in a creek when his car was washed off the road on Saturday, the Missouri Highway Patrol told the AP. Kammerer, a tow truck driver, was electrocuted by a downed power line while he attempted to retrieve a vehicle that had gone off the roadway, Springfield-Greene County Office of Emergency Management executive director Chet Hunter said. Six deaths related to flooding were confirmed in Pulaski County Sunday. According to Pulaski County Sheriff Ron Long, there were two separate incidents where cars drove into flooded roadways and were swept away. Long has identified the two victims of the first incident as 53-year-old Ron Gray, and 50-year-old Sandra Tilley, both of Dixon. The second incident involved four international soldiers, Long said. The soldiers have not yet been identified as the U.S. State Department is still in the process of notifying family members.  A 52-year-old man was killed in Douglas County Sunday night when he was swept away while attempting to bring cattle to higher ground, the NWS reported. There has been one storm-related death in Dallas County, according to Gov. Jay Nixon's office, but no further information was available as of early Wednesday evening.  Nixon declared a State of Emergency on Sunday, according to KSDK News.  "Widespread flooding and continued rainfall are causing very dangerous conditions across much of central and southern Missouri," said Nixon in a release. “Multiple fatalities due to flash flooding have already been reported, and I urge Missourians in flood-affected areas to stay alert, avoid travel if possible and never drive into a flooded roadway.
