Daffodil supplants iris as Athens official flower

Mayor Nancy Denson, according to Keep Athens Clarke-County Beautiful Program Education Specialist Stacy Smith.“Our executive director was speaking to the mayor and she was really excited about the daffodils,” Smith said. “The idea came out of that conversation as a way of celebrating the project.”In thanks for the mayor’s support for the project, Keep Athens Clarke-County Beautiful presented the mayor and city hall with a framed photo of daffodils. The mayor made no effort to hide her feelings on the matter.“Try to say daffodil without smiling. You can’t do it,” Denson said.Denson wasn’t the only one showing plenty of love to the daffodil.Reading the resolution, Wright called the daffodil one of the earliest harbingers of spring and “a symbol of hope, renewal, optimism, rebirth, and new beginnings.”Smith, who says the long-term goal is to plant daffodils at all 11 GA-10 interchanges, noted other attributes of the flowers.“They're something that bloom nice and early. They don't block traffic. They come back every year. It was just a really great plant that fit in well with the requirements,” she said. They made progress on that goal earlier this year during January’s Martin Luther King day of service, where approximately 125 community volunteers came together to plant 30,000 daffodil bulbs on the North Avenue ramps.According to Smith, the next batch of daffodils will be planted at the Old Hull Road ramp on Nov. 12.

Ruthie – in the house that connects to the shop, and ran it for 29 years before their son, Tim, took over and raised his family there with his wife, Stacy. The Hutchisons will celebrate 50 years of ownership with a Community Open House on Sept. 28, 29, and 30, during business hours.Starting his businessMax said he always enjoyed flowers, and especially enjoys daffodils that signal the start of spring, and fall chrysanthemums – his two favorite seasons of the year.“I got my feet wet in the floral business when I lived in Mount Union,” he said. “I knew that’s what I wanted to do. We were married and had four children, so it wasn’t feasible to start from the ground up. So, we checked around to see if there was a shop for sale. That's when we found Fisher’s. They had no children, and he was 61 and looking to retire. We made arrangements to take it over.”Max said his father helped them with the start-up costs once he sold his farm and they were able to take the shop over in 1967.“I had always liked flowers, and I knew I didn't want to stay on the farm,” Max added. “In a sense, I was my own boss, even though it was long hours and many times we worked on Sundays and holidays. I just enjoyed working with flowers and plants, and raising our family here was a good thing.”Max said they always used a delivery van to ship out the flowers to customers' homes and funeral homes. However, there have been many changes in the business over the years.“I noticed when we took it over, corsages were very popular, like around Easter. Now, you hardly sell any. Sil...
