Jun 19, 2020New Hampshire florists see demand bloom despite event cancellations - New Hampshire Business Review
In March, “If we got one or two orders a day, we felt lucky,” said Jordan Hewson, owner of Designed Gardens Flower Studio in North Conway.
But then Mother’s Day hit and many florists found they couldn’t keep up with demand.
“It was unbelievable,” Hewson said. “I had to shut down my website because I couldn’t take a single more order.”
Up to 75% of businesses polled by The Society of American Florists reported increased sales on Mother’s Day this year, despite the pandemic, according to a press release published May 21.
“We’re really encouraged to see that spending increased, despite the many potential obstacles – financial, logistical – that could have driven floral spending on gifts downward,” said Society of American Florists (SAF) CEO Kate Penn.
Shirley Wrenn of Shirley’s Flowers and Sweets in Nashua recently added a third vehicle to keep up with demand. “We have been crazy, crazy, crazy,” she said, with Mother’s Day orders extending two weeks beyond May 10.

Jun 19, 2020Local florists and restaurants work against shortages for Mother's Day - Desert Sun
Jordan Hall, a member of the Hall family that owns Palm Springs Florist, said global wholesalers have supply chains to all continents and it's affected everyone, but they have been able to order what they need to make it through Mother's Day."Our ability to order flowers normally has become unavailable or slowed, but we've been in business for so long and have such a large supply source that we've been able to piece together what we need," Hall said. "If we were to go through one of the standard wholesalers, they might not have everything. It's going to affect all flower shops, especially the smaller ones who might not have the same type of business revenue and don't have the same resources." Hall added that events such as El Niño, a monsoon or early summer rains can cause supply interruptions, but nothing on this scale has happened before forcing some florists to accommodate the shortage by eliminating custom made orders. "We've seen some big shops doing these $75 to $200 price points and they're saying, 'We'll make it anything we want.' The customer doesn't have a choice on what they're getting and that's based on the supply chain," Hall said. Sharon Weinstein of Rancho Mirage Florist said the situation has improved for their business needs over the past couple of weeks. "It's been a little difficult to get some of the tropical flowers that we pull in from Costa Rica and Colombia. It's gotte...

Tyler Lockett and David Moore, defensive tackle Poona Ford and backup center Jordan Roos to go home.“It was pretty crazy,” Flowers said. “They tried to send me home, I wasn’t taking that for an answer, I had to put on the doctor mask. Then I looked I was going to die out here. I’m glad all of that is over with, we’re trying to get back to normal.” Flowers’ improvement is an aspect of the defenses’ improvement as the season has progressed. The addition of Quandre Diggs at free safety has settled the back end of the defense. Meanwhile, the pass rush has finally blossomed as well and the result has been 11 turnovers forced over the team’s last three games.“I think we’re just all hitting our stride,” Flowers said. “We’re getting better. We’re not at the top and we’re for sure not perfect, so we’re just going to keep getting better.”Notes: DE Jadeveon Clowney (core) and DE Ziggy Ansah (neck) will be game-time decisions Sunday night against the Los Angeles Rams. … CB Neiko Thorpe had surgery to address a sports hernia and will be placed on injured reserve. … FB Nick Bellore (quadriceps), TE Luke Willson (hamstring) and LB Mychal Kendricks (hamstring) are doubtful to play against the Rams.
