Obituary: Joseph Walter Fortenberry - Oak Ridge Today

Texas. Joe leaves his sister Mary Ellen Clark and her husband Don Clark, along with nieces Julie Holland and Terri Kerley of Knoxville and Steffanie Benson-Elliott of Altamonte Springs, Florida; nieces Stephanie Hall and Lindsay Morton and families; and nephews Ryan and Christopher Kittrell and families, all of Atlanta, Georgia. Joe was preceded in death by his mother Stella, his father Joseph Hubert, and his younger sister Debra Fortenberry. Joe will be missed, but the family is comforted knowing that he is free from the pain and discomfort he had experienced for years. A celebration of Joe’s life will be held in June 2021 in Knoxville, Tennessee, with the dates to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe’s name to Sacred Heart Home in Hyattsville, Maryland, are welcomed. Sacred Heart is where Joe called home for the last 12 years. The wonderful staff and the Ministry of Sisters, Servants of Mary Immaculate, made Joe feel safe and secure and introduced him to the beautiful teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Master Gardeners of Shelby County announce 2020 gardening series - sidneydailynews.com

On April 21, Doug Benson, Master Gardener volunteer coordinator for Shelby County, will make attendees forget winter by focusing on how to get gardens ready for spring. He’ll include cleaning up dead stuff (and how to determine what’s really dead or just hibernating), tools that make spring cleaning easier, pruning and shaping shrubs and trees, and enriching the soil for future growth. On May 19, Teresa Freisthler, president of Shelby County Master Gardeners, will focus on plants that perform well in containers. She’ll include tips on how to select and care for container plants as well as how to combine different plants for optimum growth. As part of her program, Freisthler will discuss companion planting, the art of grouping plants that optimize the health of each other. Master Gardener Janet Nelson has been growing and using herbs for years. On June 16 she will share information on which herbs do best in the region, when and how to plant various herbs, what to do with them afterwards and how to preserve them. Starting with herbs that everyone recognizes, Nelson will introduce attendees to some of the lesser known herbs. Best of all, Nelson always brings in samples of her favorite recipes. On Aug. 18 Master Gardeners Russ Stewart and Ann Heeley will showcase the toughest of the tough: plants that defy gardeners to kill them. Included are annuals, perennials, shrubs and houseplants. These are the plants that thrive on neglect and are easy to grow. On Sept. 15 Master Gardener Mark Hipple will show how compost is the greatest gift that can be given to a garden. Creating compost at home, even with limited space, is easier than people think. Compost nourishes the soil as it breaks up clay, helps prevent disease, fertilizes plants and is totally organic. Birthday celebration: Joshua Springs resident turns 104 years old

BULLHEAD CITY — It was no ordinary birthday party.But, then again, no 104th birthday ever merited just an “ordinary” party.Kathryn Benson, who reached that age Thursday, was greeted with cards, flowers and balloons, as expected.She also received a serenade of her favorite hymns and a surprise visit from Bullhead City Mayor Tom Brady.Benson, who has resided at Joshua Springs Senior Living Community since December 2015, said that her declaring faith in God at an early age laid the foundation for her longevity.“He has controlled my life, and he walks beside me,” Benson said.The mayor presented Benson a bouquet of flowers and read a proclamation congratulating her on her milestone.The celebration included musical entertainment by a quartet from Desert Shores Community Baptist Church. Two of Benson’s four children, daughter Dena Lentz and son Jim Benson, were present.Joshua Springs staff also prepared a cake for Benson, complete with pink icing and numerical candles indicating her age.Benson was born Sept. 21, 1913, in El Cajon, Calif., at a time when Woodrow Wilson was president, Major League Baseball had 16 teams, in... MLK Day shootings of 8 people in park sparked by rival gangs, police say

Also shot but in stable condition were Wilson, Alfanesha Times, 17, Michael Clarke, 30, Nakya-Senat Butler, 15, and Lajada Benson, 14.On Tuesday, during the press conference in the park, police said they were looking for two black males, both 18 or 19 years old. One was said to be thin with a short haircut and wearing black jacket and khaki pants. The other wore a red shirt and had shoulder- length dreadlocks.Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers has upped the reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the shooters to $21,000.Monday afternoon, within a couple of hours of the shooting, police took two men into custody for questioning. Later in the day they were arrested on weapons charges that police said were unrelated to the shootings.Tavarius Flowers, 29, and Alexander Brito-Peralta, 28, were charged with carrying concealed weapons. Flowers was also charged with child abuse.Police said they recovered a 9mm Taurus Millenium semi-automatic handgun. Flowers told police he grabbed his gun from his waistband when he heard gunshots and stuck his three kids under the playground set.Brito-Peralta was taken into custody, police said, after officers noticed a gun in his waistband. Police said they haven’t ruled out the two being involved in the shootings; they just haven’t yet gathered enough evidence to charge them.The shooting took place just a few hours after civil rights leader U.S. Rep. John Lewis, spoke at the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project in Miami and urged the audience to “never, ever hate.” Miami wasn’t alone in gunfire ruining what was supposed to be a day of celebration and remembrance of one of the nation’s great leaders, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.In Jacksonville, two teens were shot and one was killed during a shooting at Jacksonville Landing after the parade there had ended. And in Hallandale Beach, one man was killed and two others were injured after gunfire erupted near the route of that city’s Martin Luther King Day Parade.The shootings in Miami-Dade on Monday also brought back fresh memories of another bloody day in the county, 20 years ago. That day, 5-year-old Rickia Isaac was killed by a stray bullet while walking home from the MLK Day Parade.The bloodshed spilled Monday at the park has reinvigorated a fight against youth gun violence that has been waged in Miami-Dade over the past decade. A Miami Herald investigation last year showed that 316 teens and children were lost to gunfire in the decade from 2007 through 2016.“Gunshots rang out in a playground where children were playing. And this is unacceptable,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez. “It takes all of us to protect all of us. There were hundreds of people in the park during the shooting. People know what happened and we’re asking them to come forward.”Battle, who’s likely to spend more than a week in the hospital, said he attends the parade every year and going to the park has become a tradition.
