San Anselmo artist sends free flower art to those who are sick - Marin Independent Journal

Tucker Nichols knows what it’s like when life throws you a curveball. He was a 28-year-old graduate student at Yale University studying Chinese paintings when he was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, an inflammatory bowel disease, after being hospitalized for several weeks.Courtesy of Tucker Nichols“Flowers for people who don’t like to cook but here comes dinner” by Tucker Nichols. The San Anselmo artist is now in remission, but he remembers what an isolating experience it was to be sick and how helpless others feel when trying to be supportive. From those musings came “Flowers for Sick People,” his free project in which he mails a small flower painting to someone who is ill — and now includes front-line caregivers — on behalf of someone else. He also creates flower works with titles like “Flowers for the quiet” and “Flowers for the sheer terror of an invisible killer” on his website that he hopes speak to what everyone is going through during the pandemic. Influential Santa Ana High teacher Bill Roberts dies at 75 - Los Angeles Times

Roberts played an instrumental role in helping these students shatter stereotypes and attend prestigious universities such as Yale and Cornell. As for Montiel, she is believed to be one of the first students from the school to attend Harvard. Accepted in 2005, Montiel has since helped others pave a similar path. “It’s been really, really hard, but at the same time I see the beauty in what he started,” she said of Roberts. “The belief he placed in me is a gift I keep moving forward. Now it’s my turn to give it to somebody else.”Roberts, who taught at Santa Ana High for nearly 30 years, died Christmas Day after battling prostate cancer for five years, his wife, Jeri, said. Robert Mercer, CEO who helped win Goodyear War, dies at age 96 - Akron Beacon Journal

U.S. entered World War II and he and his twin were drafted into the Navy. Mercer attended officer candidate school at Yale University and received an officer’s commission, and served on the USS Cleveland. He graduated from Yale in 1946 with a degree in mechanical engineering.He is survived by his wife, Mary (Deuel); they married in 1947. That same year he joined Goodyear as a sales trainee, selling conveyor belt and industrial hose in the company’s Duluth, Minnesota, territory that included Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.He was promoted throughout his years at Goodyear and was named company president in 1978, chief operating officer in 1980 and then chairman and CEO in 1983, succeeding Charles Pilliod. He retired as CEO at age 65, with Tom Barrett taking over the top position."It is not an exaggeration to say that the Goodyear of today would not exist without Bob Mercer," said Rich Kramer, Goodyear chairman, president and chief executive officer."As our CEO during the attempted takeover of the company in 1986, Bob stood firm in his commitment to our associates, to the company, to our customers and to the city of Akron.
