Oct 10, 2019Arthur Hughes, former owner of Dearborn Farm Market, dies at 82 - Detroit Free Press
Patrick would go on to follow in his dad's footsteps. He purchased the Trentwood Farm Market in Woodhaven from Hughes and later opened another location in Southgate.
Meanwhile, Art Hughes continued to operate the Dearborn Farm Market for 35 years until last December, when he decided to retire. Patrick said Hughes sold the store to a private owner.
Hughes became blind in February, due the disease, temporal arteritis. According to WebMD, the illness causes the blood vessels that carry oxygen from the heart to the rest of the body to become inflamed. The disease commonly occurs in large and medium-sized temporal arteries that travel on both sides of the head. Temporal arteritis can cause symptoms such as headaches as well as face and joint pain. It can also cause vision problems and blindness.
However, Patrick said his father learned to adjust to being blind and did not let that prevent him from living his life. Earlier this month, Hughes went to a Detroit Tigers game with his wife, Ellen, their daughter and son-in-law.
But on Sept. 20, Hughes was rushed to the hospital after a lung collapsed. Patrick said from there, his father's condition worsened.
"My dad worked his whole life," he said. "He had eight children. He worked three jobs at one point before he owned his own business to provide for all of us. His body was worn out."
Patrick said his father has dealt with health issues before, surviving stage three cancer when he was only 33 years old.
"He was a extremely strong and faithful man," he said. "His life was dedicated to work and helping others. We all feel pretty much at peace. He knew it was time and we know that he was ready.
"Everything I do in my life in regards to the business came from him and I'm not gonna take any credit for any of it, it's all him."
Hughes is survived by his wife, Ellen, and their eight children: Cathy, Lorrie, Ann, Greg, Tim, Kelly, Christine and Patrick. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The visitation will be held on Tuesday from 1-9 p.m. at the Vermeulen-Sajewski Funeral Home, 46401 Ann Arbor Road, in Plymouth. A rosary is scheduled that day from 7-7:30 p.m. The funeral will take place Wednesday from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, 47650 North Territorial Road, in Plymouth.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Special Olympics Michigan or St. Vincent de Paul.
