(Courtesy of Alex Daiken) Allie Caren Video editor focusing on breaking news and viral content June 13 Gabby Horner-Shepherd wasn’t expected to live to see her first birthday. She was born with the genetic disorder partial trisomy 13, and doctors said that if she did make it through her first year, she would likely fall into a vegetative state soon after. But 21 years later, Gabby is still here. Because of her disability, Gabby has the motor skills and cognitive understanding of an 18-to-24-month-old, her mother said. Still, Gabby enjoys horseback riding, paddle boarding and zip-lining. And she’s a big fan of Ed Sheeran. Gabby is in her final year of high school near the family’s home in Port Dover, Ontario. South Jersey flower shop will help special needs students grow toward employment - Cherry Hill Courier Post

WATERFORD - The room smelled like springtime, even though a harsh February wind blew through the pines outside the Archway School's flower shop, From the Ground Up. Nestled in a trailer at its Atco campus, the shop is where special needs students learn the basics for horticulture and floral design. Their arrangements, corsages and centerpieces become accessories and decorations for school functions like graduations and fundraisers. Soon, though, the school will launch a separate, full service retail store in a nearby shopping center, staffed by students and individuals in Archway's adult programs. On a recent Monday, 16 students trimmed white chrysanthemums and carnations, carefully placing them in mason jars with tree fern and baby's breath. Kris Henle-Blank watched, reminding them to leave enough stem so the delicate flowers could rea...

How a flower farmer found her way after a heartbreaking loss

Fitzgerald has started Bizzy Lizzies Flowers, a flower-growing business. The business operates from her garden in rural Co Waterford, which she has spent years honing from what was once an overgrown seaside valley. Neither she nor Paddy were gardening experts when they first set out to tackle the sprawling land they purchased after leaving their native Dublin in 1998. "I had a Montessori school and Paddy was a violinist. He had been with the symphony orchestra since he was 16, but I think he'd kind of had enough. We had a lovely Victorian house in Harold's Cross, but every time we went away, I'd come back and I'd say it would be great if we could have a bigger garden, because it was only the size of a postage stamp. So we decided to leave. We started to look and as we looked we realised we wanted to live by the coast. We found this place in Rathmoylan near Dunmore East. Paddy jobshared and started teaching music. I took on the garden full-time." The site is eight acres. Two acres are a field and the rest is essentially garden, though some areas have been left to their own devices. "It w...

Florist to the stars: Bringing beauty to the Kardashians

Oprah Winfrey, the Kardashians, Tina Turner), luxury brands and museums. He's designed vases for Daum and Waterford, the former included in the permanent collection at the Dallas Museum of Art. In 2014, he was awarded the Chevalier de L'Ordre des Arts et Lettres, in recognition of his contribution to French culture as artistic director at the Four Seasons George V."We really revolutionized the way people think of flowers at George V. We moved out the furniture and started creating these amazing floral art compositions in the lobby. We've changed the way people look at flowers in hotels, in restaurants, in homes," Leatham said. These days he's splitting his time between Paris and Los Angeles, running his eponymous studio out of the Four Seasons Los Angeles at Beverly Hills, all while planning his own fall wedding. (Yes, his team at Jeff Leatham is doing the flowers.)Laid back L.A.On the difference between living in Los Angeles and Paris, Leatham is diplomatic (as all proper knights are). "The Parisians have been so great for me, but I'm enjoying being back here in Los Angeles, because it's so laid back and the beautiful, sunny weather." When it comes to food, he likes The Ivy in Beverly Hills, "For me it's great because it's an L.A. standard, and there's beautiful flowers everywhere." When in Paris, which is now for just a few days each month, he takes most of his meals at the hotel. When he does venture out, it's mostly on foot, "That's one great thing about Paris compared to Los Angeles. In Paris, you walk everywhere. You're inspired every day by walking."Inspiration is integral to Leatham's process and his continued success. He's a film buff, a lover of fashion and a devotee of mid-century modernism. "If you look now in fashion, in design, everyone has always been inspired by flowers. I'm definitely working in the right industry because it just keeps growing." He's also extremely proud of the work he's done and of what he and his team continue to do on a daily basis. "I'm nothing without my team in Paris and L.A., but I think that's one thing that sometimes we have to slow down and think what we're doing every day really impacts people's lives. We're so blessed to be able to do that."... (CNN)
