Old Mission Flowers, Traverse CityGinny Coulter says her business plan is simple: “Grow amazing flowers and invite customers to come pick them.” There’s no cash register, no scanner, and no salesperson, but her garden — bursting with whatever is blooming (narcissus, tulips, peonies, china asters, celosias, ageratums … ) is open every day, dawn to dusk, until October. Simply cut what you like, pop them in a provided jug, pail, or vase of water if you like, then drop cash or a check in the tube on her garden shed door. Find it about 14 miles up Old Mission Peninsula at 16550 Center Rd. (Driveway is accessible via Ladd Rd., on right.)
Leelanau Specialty Cut Flowers, CedarYou can stop by Michelle Shackelford’s flower farm stand (13435 S. Cedar Rd.) any day of the week, through mid-October, for oodles of fresh-cut, sustainably grown flowers (plus potted herbs, heirloom tomatoes, and dried lavender), but you can also sign up for a subscription: You’ll receive a weekly bouquet (four pickup locations available), through September, for $72 a month. Want to keep that fresh feeling going all year? Ask about her November and December wreaths and centerpieces, too.

May 18, 2016Fantastic weather coming for Michigan's explosion of color from tulips, cherries
Michigan will love that weather.
Tulip Time runs from Saturday, May 7, to May 14 in downtown Holland.
The Traverse City area cherry blossoms are also about to erupt with color.
Cool nights and near normal temperature days are just what we want for a long display of color from these two spring performers.
Gwen Auwerda, Executive Director of Tulip Time in Holland, MI says tulip blossoms can last up to 21 days if high heat is avoided. Auwerda says most of the tulips in Holland, MI are at peak right now, with some of the late bloomers expected to peak next week.
The peak blooming is right on time for the Tulip Time festival.
Auwerda says nights in the 40s and days in the 60s will let the tulips keep their flowers three weeks. If we hit 80°, the blooms don't last very long. In that warm scenario the blooms only last a few days.

The temperature forecast for May 12-18, 2016 calls for Michigan's temperatures to be normal to slightly cooler than normal. It's not something most want to hear right now, but the tulips and cherry blossoms will love it.

Apr 28, 2016Experience northern Michigan's spring wildflower show
TRAVERSE CITY — Warm, sun-filled days coax the region’s spring wildflowers from the earth for the brief annual show. Several hikes guided by local wildflower whisperers provide opportunity to experience the display within woodlands, wetlands and dunes.
Paula Dreeszen leads hikes through the Pete’s Woods section of Arcadia Dunes. Arcadia Dunes, known as C.S. Mott Nature Preserve, is Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy’s largest preserve. The 1.5-mike walk highlights the early cycle in the region’s six-week progression of wildflower blooms.
“People so look forward to the change from winter to spring and to all the life popping out,” said Dreeszen.
Experts help locate and identify emerging plants and blooms, maximizing the experience, she said.
Rainfall amounts, temperatures and soil fertility time the display. The season’s first blooms peek from their beds, stimulated by sun rays falling to the forest floor unblocked by leafy tree canopies. The region’s spring wildflower show typi... (Traverse City Record Eagle)
