Arthur Hughes, former owner of Dearborn Farm Market, dies at 82 - Detroit Free Press
He purchased the Trentwood Farm Market in Woodhaven from Hughes and later opened another location in Southgate.
Meanwhile, Art Hughes continued to operate the Dearborn Farm Market for 35 years until last December, when he decided to retire. Patrick said Hughes sold the store to a private owner.
Hughes became blind in February, due the disease, temporal arteritis. According to WebMD, the illness causes the blood vessels that carry oxygen from the heart to the rest of the body to become inflamed. The disease commonly occurs in large and medium-sized temporal arteries that travel on both sides of the head. Temporal arteritis can cause symptoms such as headaches as well as face and joint pain. It can also cause vision problems and blindness.
However, Patrick said his father learned to adjust to being blind and did not let that prevent him from living his life. Earlier this month, Hughes went to a Detroit Tigers game with his wife, Ellen, their daughter and son-in-law.
But on Sept. 20, Hughes was rushed to the hospital after a lung collapsed. Patrick said from there, his father's condition worsened.
"My dad worked his whole life," he said. "He had eight children. He worked three jobs at one point before he owned his own business to provide for all of us. His body was worn out."
Patrick said his father has dealt with health issues before, surviving stage three cancer when he was only 33 years old.
"He was a extremely strong and faithful man," he said. "His life was dedicated to work and helping others. We all feel pretty much at peace. He knew it was time and we know that he was ready.
"Everything I do in my life in regards to the business came from him and I'm not gonna take any credit for any of it, it's all him."
Hughes is survived by his wife, Ellen, and their eight children: Cathy, Lorrie, Ann, Greg, Tim, Kelly, Christine and Patrick. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The visitation will be held on Tuesday from 1-9 p.m. at the Vermeulen-Sajewski Funeral Home, 46401 Ann Arbor Road, in Plymouth. A rosary is scheduled that day from 7-7:30 p.m. The funeral will take place Wednesday from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, 47650 North Territorial Road, in Plymouth.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Special Olympics Michigan or St. Vincent de Paul.

The Flower Bar: flowers, coffee, pastries and more
ChristmasMore: South Lyon Hotel reopens after rebuilding from massive fireThat includes coffee from Uncommon Coffee in Southgate, espresso drinks, tea, chai latte and other drinks. Baked goods come from Cantoro's in Livonia and Crust in Fenton. Some baked goods also come from the Shimmy Shack."We try to sell local stuff as much as possible — from Detroit, South Lyon, Southgate," said Brett Huey, who previously had an automotive related-business. Some unusual dishes are offered at the Flower Bar. (Photo: LeAnne Rogers)That includes bath bombes and other products from Made With Love Essentials. Another product is a line of flavored vinegars, ranging from watermelon to beet and carrot and lemon ginger."You can just drink them or use them as drink mixes. They taste better than regular apple cider vinegar," said Celia Huey, who is studying business management at Wayne State University. "We work really hard to find things that you can't buy in downtown Plymouth."Due to restrictions of its building, the Flower Bar is allowed only outdoor seating. "We would like to do outdoor events. It's ever-evolving. We want to be a destination — let's stop by and see what they are doing today," Brett Huey said. "We see mostly South Lyon customers, people on their way to Ann Arbor. We get so many cars here that have to stop at the four-way stop (intersection). On the weekends, they say they went by, but were running late."The building also doesn't accommodate a drive-through window, which many coffee-related shops rely on. "We can't have a drive-through, but we want to have people come in so that we can get to know their tastes," Laura Huey said. "Right now, we've just been trying to get the word out that we're open."img itemprop="url" src="https://www.gannett-cdn.com/-mm-/abc24fbd7747a50af62bd39601855788dddef857/c=5-0-4027-3024&r=x408&c=540x405/local/-/media/2017/12/01/MIGroup/Livonia/636477413362792811-SLh.flower-bar-3-2-.JPG" alt="Fresh-cut flowers, even some kale, are offered at the" width="540" heig...
