Mar 23, 2018Daffodil Day: Cancer survivor Gillian's fears for future after months of gruelling treatment
Gaynor French, now 47, admitted she thought the diagnosis was a death sentence. The former biology lecturer from Co Roscommon said: “I thought that was it. I lost my mother-in-law from my first marriage to it. I also looked after a little girl whose mother died of it.“I thought I was a goner but now the treatments are so much more advanced.“The hospital care is so good your head doesn’t get a chance to catch up until a year after the chemo, the radiography, everything.“I can’t praise them enough.”However, four-and-a-half years after her diagnosis, Gaynor went back to her doctor feeling tired and learned she had stage four metastatic breast cancer. The mother of three and granny of one was given six months to live if she didn’t respond to chemo. She said: “Two years later, I’m still going strong. Even though I have stage four cancer, I’m healthy and fit.“I may have hair one minute and none the next but I am healthy and there’s no sign I have anything wrong with me.”And Gaynor praised the charity for helping her get through. She added: “I was self-employed and lost my business. The Irish Cancer Society provided me with a grant so I could at least pay for the kids’ Christmas.”Pictured is Laura Brennan from Co Clare (Image: Ma...

At 1:57 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 7, Roscommon County Central Dispatch received a call from a motorist traveling northbound on I-75 several miles south of Roscommon, who due to poor visibility from the snow, rear ended a semi-truck pulling a large trailer northbound on I-75 in Roscommon County, Roscommon County Sheriff Randall Stevenson said. The caller's mini-van became lodged under the trailer and was being pulled down I-75 unbeknownst to the driver of the semi-truck. Inside the mini-van were the Menz family Matt, 46, Pamela, 47, Justin, 26, and Jennifer, 22. The family was traveling from the Flint airport and were almost to their home in Roscommon. Roscommon County and Crawford County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to attempt to locate the vehicles. The vehicles were later intercepted by deputies from the Crawford County Sheriff's Office, south of Grayling on northbound I-75. Deputies successfully stopped the vehicles without incident, 16 miles from where the original collision had occurred. The Menz family was transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital Grayling for evaluation, but no serious injuries were sustained. The Graying Free Methodist Church, located at 6352 M-72 West, purchased the adjacent property, previously owned by a local accounting firm. The building will be used for needed classroom space, youth programming and temporary office space. In addition, the extra parking will be needed as the church undergoes a building and addition project.Makayla Cragg - a 2014 Grayling High School graduate and a three-sport athlete at GHS - attended Alpena Community College, where she planned to play softball for the Lumberjacks. Having the scholarship that I received is also a bonus and helps out a lot financially," Cragg said.22The Crawford AuSable Schools District's Board of Education officially approved the Extended Learning Year (ELY) program.
