Feb 2, 20161300 SC churches use worship time Sunday to stand against gun violence
Emanuel AME. As Pastor Don Flowers read each name, the congregation started getting emotional.
A few tears fell from Flowers' eyes.
"Rev. Pinckney was our colleague, you know it really did hit home. And so we feel like we've got to do something," Flowers said.
Close to 1,300 churches around the Palmetto State participated. At Providence, people lined the aisles to sign a letter to lawmakers, urging them to change gun laws.
"At some point, I just felt like the churches have for too long been silent on the issue. We have not taken a stand on the issue our voice the religious voice the moral voice has not been in the conversation. This was an opportunity to make that difference and say we have a voice to be heard," Flowers said.
Outside the church, there were five wooden crosses, symbolizing the five people who have died this year to gun violence in the Lowcountry.
Flowers realizes his voice and his sermon is not going to make the difference alone, but thinks there is power in numbers.
"I think 1,300 churches across the state saying we want to do something about guns makes me very hopeful that something will happen this year," Flowers said.
Churches are asking for at least nine members of their congregation to come to a Statehouse rally this spring in a fight towards stricter background checks on gun purchases.
