Children can be heard making testable inferences like “the smaller flowers seem to open first” and “the flowers higher on the stem are slower to open.” Adults start counting blossoms and predicting which will open next. Campbell Folk School in the mountains of North Carolina have a population of ‘Tina James’ to tantalize students, teachers, and visitors. Swonk's Flower Shop, downtown for 91 years, will close Saturday

Jeanette Schmid had worked at Swonk's since the 1960s when she was in high school. She took a break in 1994 when they moved to Lansing but came back to Battle Creek in 2002 when they bought the store. She's been running it ever since. "It's not a business that's real lucrative, so you can't really think about that part," Schmid said. "It's the satisfaction of doing it. So I thought about being a secretary, but that fell by the wayside, and I stayed with this as a career. I continued working in a flower shop in Lansing. I never left the flower business." Until now, when the Schmids decided it was time to retire. Jeanette Schmid will continue to work with flowers in her own garden at home. She has 12 flower beds that she's looking forward to filling with phlox, lilies, hollyhocks and more once spring returns. "They're miracles," Schmid said. "To watch a flower grow, come to life, bloom, and there's so many different kinds. They're a magnificent creation of God. And they're beautiful." Schmid incorporated her own flowers into Swonk's. When her blooms were doing well, she would cut them and add them to the arrangements she made for customers. "It's that personalized service that I strive for, and if, after service, they need a hug, they get one," Schmid said. Burt Reynolds, actor and longtime Jupiter and Martin County resident, dies at 82

Treasure Coast theater community. The Palm Beach High School graduate, who was born in Lansing, Michigan, died Thursday at age 82. Donna Carbone, managing director at Burt Reynolds Institute for Film and Theatre in Jupiter, said Thursday a family member confirmed the actor's death. It was at 12:47 p.m. Thursday when the Martin County Sheriff's Communication Center in Stuart received a 911 call from Reynolds' home in the 16800 block of Southeast Federal Highway, according to the Sheriff's Office. The caller asked for medical help for an 82-year-old man who was having difficulty breathing. "Deputies and Fire Rescue personnel were dispatched to the home and made contact with Mr. Reynolds and his caretaker," sheriff's officials said. "Mr. Reynolds was subsequently transported to the hospital." Beautifying downtown Lansing one flower basket at a time

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - A sure sign of summer is when downtowns get spruced up with flowers hanging from light posts. Last year in downtown Lansing, 34 hanging baskets were put up. But this year, 76 flower baskets are adorning the light poles. You can see these on Washington Square from Lenawee St. to Ottawa St., and on Michigan Ave. from Capitol Ave. to the train tracks just east of Pere Marquette through mid-September. It's part of a downtown Lansing beautification project of the Public Spaces Committee of Downtown Lansing Inc. Fifty-four local businesses and organizations have sponsored the baskets and will be recognized with a nameplate accompanying the flowers.
